Strength:

-Awesome Picture Quality -Good sound, but better if it were Optical out -CHEAP-$400Canadian was cheap for a DVD player three years ago when I bought it

Weakness:

-Does not play CDR,MP3 -No optical output, every digital source should have one for this application -Not Progressive Scan, but what do you expect for the price?

I bought this unit for $400 Canadian 3 years ago, but of course it can be found for much cheaper now. This unit has never caused me any problems. The picture quality is great, and the audio also is fantastic though it lacks an optical output. I wonder if some of the reviewers here who had problems with discs loading weren''t just dealing with dirty/scratched discs. The odd time I have a disc that won''t load I just clean the disc and then it loads fine. I plan to upgrade to a unit which will play other formats ie:MP3, CDR etc, but this is a bargain buy if you can find one.

Strength:

Great image quality, Zoom

Weakness:

Not so reliable

I like its great image quality and zoom function. It is great joy to use. However, it developed motor problem after 18 months. It can not rotate the disc. Considering that I paid top price for Toshiba brand, I am not very happy about its short life. Since I need zoom function for my 20 inch TV, I bought another Toshiba, SD2715. But Toshiba SD2715 droped dead after 8 months. Now I am really suspicious about reliability of Toshiba DVD players. I am thinking about JVC for carousal and zoom functions.

Strength:

Price, Sound and Picture.

Weakness:

The Remote Control

Got this player as a wedding gift from some friends. It's the best player for it's price, Which ranges from $200 and up. I enjoy this player so much that I bought it for my brother in-law. The quality and options(Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS) on this player are great for the price. I recommend this player to everyone, you will not be disappointed.

This player would not play Saving Private Ryan, which is one reason I wanted to get a DVD player. I know some other people have had problems playing certain movies and have sent it back to get firmware upgrades. This is just annoying.

I'm going to replace this with the same model, but I am going to make sure the manufacturing date is after August 1999.

Strength:

Good Value, Easy to Use, Toshiba Brand Quality

Weakness:

Holds only one DVD at time

Good DVD player for the money. I would have liked to have had one that holds more than one DVD at a time, but this was the first one I had ever purchased. I like the Toshiba brand and will continue to purhase their merchandise in the future.

Strength:

Good sound and picture quality, simple set-up and use, and great bang for the buck.

Weakness:

Cuts off first second of CDs on occasion, remote is less than intuitive.

For the money, the SD-1209 can't be beat. I like that it doesn't have a ton of bells and whistles; I prefer to leave the DD decoding to the receiver. I also like the component video out and the digital coax audio out.

Haven't been able to get it to crash at all, and it sounds pretty good on audio CDs. However, on occasion, it clips the first second or two on audio CDs, which can be annoying.

Though I'll probably upgrade in the future, it's a great player for the money and well worth the $229 I paid for it.

It's cheap

Weakness:

It's cheap

I bought one of theese things from the video department of a local grocery store. They had a better price than aybody else around. I can't speak for the later units that supposedly have a firmware upgrade, but mine (manufactured in June of 1999), sucks. It is unable to navigate dual layer disks at all. Armageddon, Saving Private Ryan, Titanic, thay all skip and freeze. Don't buy one of theese players unless you're sure you can return it if you have problems. Save the box until the warranty is expired. I'm very disappointed that Toshiba would put someting of this quality on the street.

DTS, Component outputs, picture and sound quality.

remote, no optical digital output (not necessarily for
quality over coax, but most receivers have more optical inputs)

I've bought this player right as they were hitting the
markets around 9 months ago. I haven't had any problems
with it and the picture and sound have always been very
good. The main reason for getting this was it was one
of the few players that had both DTS and Component outputs

Strength:

Price, DTS, compatability, quality

Weakness:

Can't play CDR's. CDs sound bassy to me, compared to DVD sound.

Very ease to operate, good video and sound. I found the package of options very attractive, especially including DTS, for the price. I don't particularly like the fact that it automatically powers off after 20 minutes of inactivity, and cannot be overriden. This, in combination with the fact that there is no memory retained of last stopping point after power off, leaves you with no way to automatically resume viewing where you left off.

I have had no problems, and have found this to be a very good entry point to DVD!
