Weakness:

Everything about it but looks.

I had the RCA RC5220P for about 2 months. After that every DVD I started playing kept on saying NO DISK or DISK is not compatible. RCA is very cheap and they wont assit you with any help what-so-ever.

Strength:

Nice price, ok unit

Weakness:

Died after playing only about 15 dvds in its short life

This player was my dads. He had bought it for his theater system and it worked fine for about 1 month. Then it just stopped reading DVD's. All kinds of errors like No disc, this disc is incompatible, and Disc may be scratched or dirty. I guess other people have had this problem and it must be a design error.

Strength:

Cheap...works well

Weakness:

No CD-R support

I've had this DVD player for about 3 years now and don't have too many objections for the price I paid for it ($100 at Ebay). I've never had a problem with it not accepting a disc but recently it has shut down completely in the middle of a movie (it has done this twice). I don't know why it does this...also, it will skip for about 1/2 second in the middle of every movie. Overall, this is a pretty decent DVD player and for what I paid I have no complaints...I will spend more money on my next player though just for the CD-R feature I want so badly...

Strength:

Low Cost, Decent features for the money. ok starter unit.

Weakness:

Can't play recorded music cd's. High tendancy for the laser lense to come out of allignment.

Unlike most of the people on this page. I would recommend most buyers to say away from this DVD player if there is an alternative at a similiar price point. The DVD player doesn't have the ability to play Recorded music CD's if you use it for music, and the overall repair history of them thus far is pretty weak. I work For Circuit City and I see these coming back all the time and people wanting different models.. I think buyer should beware.

Strength:

Great picture, Great sound.

Weakness:

Remote not backlit.

I have no previous experience with DVD players and consider myself a novice when it comes to them. I had $250.00 to spend and after a lot of research, decided on the Toshiba 2109. There was one big problem though, no one had it in stock in town and I didn't want to wait for it. I picked this up after a friend recommended it. I do not regret it one bit. This player is phenomenal. The picture, sound and features are top notch. I have an RCA TV so the remote works well with it. If I were to gripe about anything, it would be the fact that because I don't have RCA video in jacks on my TV, I had to shell out an extra $30.00 for an RF output adapter. Oh well. As I said this is a great player, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Strength:

Inexpensive, decent anamorphic down conversion, decent sound quality

Weakness:

Weak remote design, moderate menu interface, drive motor a little noisy

I bought this player for casual use by my five-year-old daughter and to occasionally watch movies outside of my theater room. The build quality is generally acceptable and the look and feel of it is not bad. The remote is horrid, but what remote outside of multi hundred dollar programmable isn’t? The video and sound quality is good, not great mind you, but more then adequate for an above average 32 inch tube. The great thing about this player is the price, $185 as of 12/3/99. If your looking to hook up a DVD to your second TV or if you have an average TV that wouldn’t benefit from a $500 player this is the one, no question about it.

Strength:

Incredible value for the price, very good picture quality and sound.

Weakness:

More limited features when compared to most other players like Pioneer or Panasonic.

I bought 2 of these in November at Best Buy when they ran them for one weekend for $149.97 with the 5 free DVDs and 13 free rentals from Blockbuster. For the price nothing comes close to this player. It's a perfect unit for either a bedroom or a starter system. The A/V outputs and features are more limited when compared to most other brands, but this player also cost half the price of those competitors. The picture and sound quality are both above average, and quite good in comparison to other brands. If you can find one for under $200, or especially for $149 like I did, buy one immediately! You won't be a bit disappointed.

Strength:

Great Picture and Sound

Weakness:

Picture freezes after playing movie for about 20 to 30 minutes.

I've had this player for about 8 months and it worked great until about 2 months ago when movies started freezing after the movie had been playing for 20 to 30 minutes. I cleaned the lens and that did not help. I finally realized that the unit was probably heating up so I set it on top of some cans to increase the ventilation underneath. I could not believe that this solved the problem. Once the unit got hot, the movies were freezing. Those of you that are having trouble with movies freezing might want to improve the ventilation for the unit underneath.

Strength:

Video playback, price

Weakness:

Remote is not laid out well

This is my first DVD player. I was waiting for the price to drop...and I found this a Office Depot for $149. I couldn't believe the price, but I figured if it sucked, i'd take it back.

So far I'm very happy, the video looks great on my 53" projection screen and it sound pretty good.

This post is with respect to the review below and some others I have seen regarding disk reading errors. I too experienced this problem at about 3 1/2 months of use. Started gradually on the odd disk and reached a stage where it wouldn't read anything. Corrected the problem by simply unplugging the unit for a couple of minutes and then plugging back in (this must somehow re-boot or re-set all circuitry)-haven't had a disk read problem since (approx 4 months of pretty heavy use). The manual actually suggests this in the troubleshooting guide if you really look hard-service reps at RCA probably don't even mention this and that is inexcusable. Hope this might help a few people.

I own a 5223 and my review is still the same-4 stars for performance-5 for value.
