Strength:

great picture

Weakness:

can't play dvd-audios

I continue to have trouble getting this player to consistently play DVD-audio. I have it connected to a BOSE Lifestyle-50 and I'm guessing that there are compatibility problems (de-coders stepping on each other?)? I have the digital output going into the BOSE and I also have the front speaker outputs going into auxilary input to the BOSE. It sometimes works and other times will not. However never have a problem playing dvd-videos. In fact I have a couple of DVD-audio that have a music video and that play fine, but the audio tracks won't play. Anyone have any suggestions? If I plug the right/left front speaker outputs into a video input to the BOSE, I do get audio, however, I think I'm giving up on getting quality 5.1 channel output and only having the BOSE break it into pseudo 5.1 channels sound.

Strength:

Great DVD player while it lasted!

Weakness:

Borke after a year of use.

It was a great DVD-Player while it lasted! I purchased the DVD player at one call on 1-24-02 and it already broke on me. This DVD player will not longer read discs, DVD Audio discs, or CD disks. I have tried cleaning the unit but still no luck. I would not recommend this unit as JVC quality is poor. I have heard from others having the same problems with this model.

Strength:

Super clarity, progressive scan, multi-disc readability! What more could you want?

Weakness:

Subtitle problems, and maybe it's just me, but I don't get audio playback on some older DVDs unless I hit the 3D phonic button. Sometimes, there is no audio at all. I NEED TO WATCH MY KUROSAWA FLICKS!!! They're recorded in mono for crying out loud!

A really great progressive scan DVD player for the price. I got it free when I purchased my widescreen HDTV, and it was a great replacement for my old DVD player. Since people have already gone very far into specifics, I guess I'll keep this short.

Strength:

Good remote control, good FF and slow frame capabilities. DVD-Audio sounds great. Excellend channel seperation vs. the DVD-Video versions of the same disc. I'm not sure why the other reviewer did not get digital sound from his DVDs unless it was in DVD-audio mode. You need to specify DVD-Video (or flip the disc over depending) to get this. Otherwise it's multichannel only. Player also handles my variable bit rate MP3s, no problem, my older Philips did not. Good on-screen display, displayed on progressive output, not just S-Video output.

Weakness:

My philips 30PW9817 doesn't understand the 480i component output on it's HD input. 480P looks excellent, and is the mode I use all the time. S-Video out is also very good. For setting up multichannel, doesn't let you set seperate volume/distance settings for L/R surrounds So if one is much closer than the other this may be a problem. Doesn't output S-Video and Component at the same time.

I replaced my older Philips DVD with the JVC, mostly so I could get DVD-audio. Great value for the money, solid progressive scan player with DVD-Audio. Great progressive and composite picture with very few artifacts. Remote is better than most. slim form factor.

Picture, Sound, Check out DVD Audio Eagles: Hell Freezes Over, unreal sound!!

Weakness:

Hookup of DVD audio requires a reciver with proper inputs.

Had a Sony 300, switched to JVC for Progressive scan with Pioneer 53" TV. BIG difference in sound quality! Great sound output! Sounded like I had upgraded my speakers! No big complaints except getting the DVD-audio hooked up was a pain!

Strength:

- Great DVD-audio - Good interlaced picture - Picture adjustments - Very slight pause when switching DVD layers -Can use digital or analog output depending on content without using menu

Weakness:

- Less common 525p output instead of 480p - Single set of audio outputs (cannot connect 5.1 to receiver and left/right to TV at the same time)

I was thrilled with this player when I used it with an old XBR monitor. The interlaced picture was great and the DVD-Audio was outrageous. Unfortunately, I ran into a problem when I purchased a high-end Sony HDTV and plugged in the JVC DVD. The picture jittered at the top in progressive mode and I couldn''t correct it. I can only surmise that the JVC''s 525p output is not compatible with the 480p input on the Sony. JVC was of no help except to say that it is probably not compatible and that I could ''sell it''. Can you imagine! (Any comments on this issue would be appreciated.) I gave it to my son who can take advantage of the quality audio, but I had to buy a Toshiba SD-4700 which works fine with the TV.

Strength:

Build quality, reliability, infallibility (with any kind of media on any disc), variety of features, easy on screen menu

Weakness:

mp3 playback good, but not great - but adequarte for my needs, it can still function as a 10 hour jukebox!

Excellent value for money, with a plethora of features that cover all your (disk-based media) needs. The MP3 playback could be better, in the sense you are limited in how you burn cds, and only 30 characters of track names are visible, ID3 is not supported (but does not make a difference to playback). Also, repeat, random etc are unavilable. But atleast (unlike the Toshiba DVD player I bought and returned within 1 week) this player reads every disc I throw at it - CDR, CDRW, with MP3, Video CD on CDRW, DVD, DVD RW - pretty impressive. Yes, mp3 and DVD Audio playback only woks with the analog outputs, so get over it - they still sound awesome! I''''d recommend this to anyone.

Strength:

Built in Dobly Digital 5.1 and DTS decoders. Plays Audio DVD''s, and Mp3''s etc. Also has progressive scan for whenever I get the $$$ to buy a sweet HDTV.

Weakness:

Can''t think of any really, the mp3''s don''t see to work, but i''m sure it''s something that can be figured out.

Well, I must say, it''s a joy to finally make good use out of my expensive Sony v33ES receiver. With this JVC dvd player I can finally listen to dts and dolby digital 5.1 dvd''s without my subwoofer cutting out. At first I was thinking about getting another Sony. Then I came to find out they were phasing out the one I wanted with decoders built in, as well as 5.1 connections on the back. Then I decided to look elsewhere and here is where I came to the JVC. Built in dd 5.1 and dts decoders, as well as 5.1 output. Also plays mp3''s and vcd''s and audio dvd''s. Was kind of weird getting a GOLD dvd player when every other component I have is black, but it really doesn''t stand out, and even looks more silver. I''ve only tried playing mp3''s once thus far and couldn''t get them to work. It would read it but not play anything. I''m thinking either I have to change the ID tags of the mp3''s themselves, or like when playing audio dvd''s I might have to use the dd 5.1 connections to play rather than the optical. Either way, this is a great dvd player. I havn''t encountered any problems thus far.
