Strength:

cd tray works, zoom all features other than actually playing the disk

Weakness:

NO DISC error can't be fixed.

WARNING this thing started the "no disc" stuff after watching the rugrats dvd with the special scratch & Sniff feature. Bought it cheap because we could afford it, and now we have a dvd collection and no player!

Strength:

Great at ejecting DVD/CDs (didn't push the eject button). Incredible freeze frame (didn't push the freeze frame button)the thing has a mind of its own and it does not like you!

Weakness:

Its an Apex.

I thought that this might be a great deal. I mean who can beat $57.00? Well it worked all of 6 months before it crazy. I would watch a movie and in the middle it would eject on its own. But not before the screen froze every 10 seconds. I am now embarrassed to admit that I own an Apex. Thought about writing the company till I saw these reviews. What a rip-off!

I made the biggest mistake in purchasing this product. I guess I got what I paid for. How can I get my money back? The machine only plays particular DVD'S. I can't go to Blockbuster and rent an DVD due to the terrible quality picture. I always have to return the dvd and purchase on video. The screen goes light, then dark and then a blue screen. How does APEX get away with murder in manufacturing these substandard machines?

Strength:

Was good for a short time with a good picture. Fairly cheap price.

Weakness:

'NO DISC' error problem, apparently a lasser alignment issue! Continuous flipping of discs and remote control does not always work right away.

Just wanted to warn everyone to really check out an APEX before purchasing one. We were very happy to finally buy a DVD less then a year ago and over looked some odd quirks with the machine until tonight. In less then a year and used only about 20 something times it's now not playing and apparently we are not the only ones this has happened to. I've read all over the web of a 'no disc' error problem with the machines lasser alignment. It contiuously flipped around a lot and the remote was fussy but now it looks like we may be out of luck with this 'no disc' error problem. The price was alright but for a few bucks more perhaps there would've been a far better product without all the headache.

Strength:

Remote control works fine. The player drawer operates correctly.

Weakness:

I've used the player only about ten times in the past year. The player drawer opens and accepts the disc, but, now, the digital display screen (on the player) says "No Disc." I tried inserting several different movie, music, and MP3 discs and the player still reads (or not reads) them all the same---"No Disc." No one knows why.

Strength:

Price, special features/functions, and upgradeability.

Weakness:

None.

This is a great player for the price! I believe most people are missing the point of why this player sells so well and is hard to find. With a simple CD upgrade, you can watch movies from other regions and make backups of your DVDs. It's a very upgradeable/hackable DVD player.

Strength:

Very good image quality. MP3 playback. Possibility to make it zone-free and macrovision-free. All in all fantastic performance/price ratio. (indicated purchase price is in Canadian dollars)

Weakness:

Letterboxing of widescreen PAL DVDs dont work with the output set to NTSC. Strange behavior of power buttons (the one on the set is only an OFF-standby switch, and the one on the remote control only a standby-ON switch).

I bought this cheap DVD-player because of its amazing price. I thought the quality would be terrible. I was very pleasingly surprised with the image quality, especially with the S-video output. I was also quite happy to be able to make it zone- and macrovision-free by flashing the firmware with an appropriate CD-R (I have discs from zones 1, 2 and 4 in my collection). The only big problem I found is that it is unable to letterbox a widescreen PAL movie when the output is set to NTSC (as I dont have multistandard TV I coudnt test it with PAL output). I also noticed that the image turns a little greener when subtitles appears while watching Panic Room with them. But it could also be a problem with my Sony TV. MP3 playback is adequate, and the menus are quite user-friendly. I never had any problems with the tray. I just wished the LCD really turned off when in standby mode, this dark green light is a little annoying.

Strength:

cheap

Weakness:

not play VCD

The quality is not too great and the sound output is bad. Be really careful about Apex all models. The box often says features that it cannot support. e.g. according to the Apex web site, they do not support VCD any more. The new 1100 unit I purchase will not play it. I need that feature for my home video. The tray always present problem too.
