KEF Audio KHT3005 Speaker System Home Theater Speaker Systems

KEF Audio KHT3005 Speaker System Home Theater Speaker Systems

DESCRIPTION

The 3000 series is the revolutionary result of harnessing nearly 50 years of experience in creating technically innovative and beautiful loudspeakers. KHT3005 is an extremely high performance, yet room-friendly home theatre system, which raises both the design and performance benchmarks in the category of elegant home theatre speaker package. KEF's patented 'sit anywhere' Uni-Q driver places the tweeter in the acoustic centre of the bass/midrange cone (woofer). This allows both woofer and tweeter to act as a single, focused source of sound that is dispersed widely and evenly throughout the room. The practical benefit is that great sound can be experienced from anywhere in the listening environment.

Strength:

Looks good, Uni-Q design, voice clarity through center speaker, nice looking and sounding subwoofer that blends well, better than most small speaker systems.

Weakness:

Lacks detail with music. Terrible sound when playing music just through the fronts.

I bought these speakers open box for $500, but I never would have paid the $1500 asking price. They’re decent speakers and sound better than most small 5.1 systems on the market, but they are still limited because of their size. I’m mostly disappointed in reviews that tout these as audiophile quality with excellent detail and clarity – this is an exaggeration, music sounds awful in 2.1 mode. Having said that, these are great for rooms with limited space and they look good too. Music does sound much better when all of them are going at the same time, but a lot of detail is just not there.

Movies are easier and sound awesome with this set-up. The center speaker stands out as clear and good for handling the majority of sounds and voices that pass through it. The subwoofer, too, works well with the rest of the system and blends nicely. Another positive is that their Uni-Q design does seem to disperse sound and you don’t sense a radically different sound just by shifting your weight or standing up, like you do with other speakers.

If you can get a good deal well under MSRP, these are nice to have because I think they’re quite versatile. They mount nicely and look good on the wall and, like I said above, they’re a little easier than other speakers to place because of the Uni-Q design. I also like the sub a lot and I’ll be keeping it around for quite some time – maybe also keep the satellites and center speakers and move them to the back for 6.1/7.1 surround along with good L/R/C bookshelf speakers in front.
