I paid 49 sinapore dollars each for the pair. S$30 dollars for shipping to my house. To say that the HT1S is a beefy sub is an understatement. My active AV marantz preamp/dp870, provides commanding control and ultra deep base. I use tnt triple T braided cat 6 speakerwire to all my speakers. In Stereo, the pre has sub db level controls to adjust how much sub you want to FEEL. I am runnning Mains on the Yamaha. The subs are connected to the RL of the Rotels. Center and Surrounds complete the other 3 channels on the Rotel. I listen to DVD Audio using my Pioneer DVK-88. For this I turn on the dp870 which puts the AV600 into bypass. DVDA is superb as it puts you in the middle of the performance. For HT, Movies like The Hulk, Bourne Identity, Armagedon, Final Fantasy and any other action movie is jaw droppingly amazing. Better than any movie theater I've ever heard - I jump to my feet sometimes in shock and alarm. I love my music so now I am thinking about upgrading the dvd player to an universal pioneer that plays both sacd and dvda but I will also have to upgrade the preamp as well because the 5.1/7.1 channel outputs are from the universal player. Will have to get a preamp with with firewire input to cut down on the rca cables. Probably going for used 1066/1098. As long as I have the space, never going to need to upgrade the ht1s. This sub rattles my windows and cabinet doors when I crank up the volume!

This monster sub could be used in single module just like any other sub-woofer. The selection of sub-base-xover and power amp used play an important role for single module configuration. The rolloff frequency got to be set to 80Hz and below. If not, mid-bass freq. shall prevail and make box directional. The original design of this THX system is to couple two small front speakers with freqency subwoofer freq. roll-off at about 150-200Hz,without the use of dedicated power amp. In this setup, 2 units HT1S got to be used.

I am just writing this to "correct" these guys who wrote that the subwoofer has to be used in pair. If they have a manual, they can read that the subwoofer can be configured in three ways: 1. as a single subwoofer driven by one amplifier output. 2. as two subwoofer driven by a single amplifier output(amplifier output to the JBL HT1S input, and the JBL HT1S output to any subwoofer). 3. two subwoofer driven by two amplifier outputs (two separate mono amplifiers or single stereo amplifier).

I have just bought this Sub as the last part of my THX equipment. THX second hand equipments do not interest people any more: Too big, too black.. If you have a system that can handle this sub, it can be a great value. But you have to have the right system. I bought two of these subs from Ubid.com. I spent $127 each. That's chicken-feed. THX subs for 127 each? What's the catch?
1) The catch is that they are passive and you MUST have a dedicated amp to run these. Ubid won't tell you that! You can hook them up in series or parellel, with one amp or two, but there are only binding posts to connect to. No line level. You can't run any wire out from these to speakers. They are at the end of the line. 2)They don't have a crossover. They rely on your receiver's built in sub crossover. So you have to run a line level out from your receiver/pre to an amp(s), and then out to the sub(s). 3)THX license is dependent on the use of two subs. Using just one sub with your three fronts and two surrounds may achieve sufficent sound pressure levels in smaller rooms, but it is not THX certified. These subs are huge! They take up a lot of space. My wife thinks our living room looks like a concert stage now. The bass gets deep and strong and I'm happy with the value of them, but then again, I have the right system. UBID.COM is very vague about describing these. They want you to buy them. They don't care if you can use them. And you can't return to them. I am absolutely sure there are many people who buy these, and then find they have no way to hook them up. I'm sure we'll be hearing from those people with ratings of 1 star (like the previous guy). But if you have an extra amp or even a receiver lying around, that you can use to drive these, they can shake your couch. I feel the bass in my chest!

price! tons of low end!

size

I bought this from U-Bid also at around $150 shipping, tax, and all. These other people just didn't read close enough! I noticed right away it was passive. Size is a little large but hey it takes a good size cabinet to produce quality ported low end. Makes a heck of an end table. I just use an old Yamaha receiver to power this sub. This things shakes the room! I love it. Major low end!

Larry, in his review, nailed it (although I can't vouch for sound quality). Through my own stupidity, I realized AFTER I got this sub (also from Ubid, same price) that I really needed a powered unit. Now I'm looking for a means to power it. I'm using a Pioneer 5-channel with 100w/channel output. I'm using the 5.1 setup and the receiver has a sub pre out. I don't have any more spare receivers lying around. I was thinking of a separate power amp for the sub. Any ideas? Of course, I'm in the usual rush.

This is a followup to my earlier post, and a response to Donald below. (Email through Audioreveiw.com didn't work.)

I've been checking amp options out, and in my limited research, I think I found a few good options. If your receiver has a sub preamp out, check out the following:
Audiosource Monoblock AMP5.1 or AMP5.2
Marantz MA 500 or MA 700 (check J&R Music World)
dbx XB 150 (one on ebay at $50.00 right now, I was bidding on it; or check J&R).

I went with the Audiosource AMP5.2 from 800.com for $229.00. The AMP5.1 was probably enough, but you can't go wrong with a little extra power. Remember, this is a 6 ohm cabinet.

From what I've read, though, you can just hook up an old receiver to your sub pre out and attach the JBL to that.

P.S. I think the sub should perform pretty well once amplified! My fingers are crossed, though. It was refurbished, and the last refurb I got from Ubid (Magnavox CD changer) didn't work at all. But this is a fairly simple speaker, so let's hope for the best!

I only review the product without any influence by the distributor behavior. This pasif Sub actualy has a very good Bass quality for Music & Movie as long as we combine it with the right equipments. As I know this Sub doesn't have X-Over so I add the Sub-Crossover between the PA & this JBL. I'm using a dedicated 100W rms PA and connecting it with a Sub Controler Paradigm X-30. Then I got the excellent Sub sound that I dreaming of.
NOTED : WITHOUT ADDING SUB XOVER & PARADIGM X-30 THIS SUB IS NOTHING, IT'S BECOME A LOW QUALITY SUB SOUND.
With this configuration, I never want to change my Subwoofer System even with the actif Sub which so many brand right now....

i have only heard this sub in a store and it sounded awesom..i am only reviewing this sub becasue of all the dumb people who reviewed this thing bad because they are idiots. dont hurt speaker ratings just because you dont read between the lines.
