I puchased these cans for the purpose of supressing the low
level sound of my computer fans. I have been using AKG171
open dynamic cans but open was the trouble.
I started reading reviews to find a closed pair of headphones
for about $35. I settled on these because I know Sony sound.
To my mind Sony is polite, and slightly colored that is until
you listen to Sony's ES series line of products.
Here's my review:
These can are very comfortable except for the rubber band
that sits on the top of you head. The rubber has a large hole
and snags your hair, takes getting used to. Otherwise I have
kept these on my ear for hours at a time , very nice. The ear cups are some kind of man made material that feels a little like silk, they are very light and that is a bit of a problem for me, I still hear the fans. There is a small drop of backround noise but not what I had hoped. The one thing that really puts me off is the appearance of this on your head, kind of like coming out of head surgery. The ear cups are pretty large and my ears only rest against the inner walls lightly, of course, I am 5'10" 220lbs. and truely I don't have elephant ears. As for the sound? Can you say rolled off? At both ends of the spectrum. There seems to be a big upward bump around 100 Hz but from there there are no fundamental bass notes. With a 40MM diaphragm I suspect a rapper with a million watt synthsizer will put out plenty of bass to hurt the listener but there's the Xd400 with 50mm's. to suck up your battery. The rest of the sound is very warm, the cans really exaggerate the upper bass. This in it's self is not awful, It's very wam sounding. The next thing you will notice is above a women's voice pitch the roller coaster starts down. I guess at about 6KHz the cans are down more than half of the 1000Hz level. I went to an FM radio and off station the hiss was muted. I think that's called white noise from20Hz to 16KHz. So I hope this will help any of you listeners looking for a weird looking but very comfortable closed headphone. Oh! I forgot to mention the slide notches for improved bass, there is a very small increase in bass output it is definately discernable, Sony calls them switches.
I'm going to keep them. Strengths:
lightweight
padding is very nice and comfy
bass output is good Weaknesses:
odd shape
rolled off high end notes (zero sizzle in cymbals)
$40 is too high a price
