It plugs directly into your dvd player.The sound seems hollow and badly reverbed.I was impresed with the analog side, clean highs, good mids, and fair bass.But I was really wishing The 5.1 would deliver.I think with more research this idea will come of age.

Summary:
Price aside (at $500.00 list this baby ain't cheap) the Sony MDR-DS5000 is a great sounding wireless headphone system that actually delivers! When you first put the headset on you are definitely aware that you are wearing headphones. After awhile (due to their light weight and head-friendly design) they become less noticeable. I actually found myself reaching for the remote to adjust the volume. You really do get a sense of 5.1 surround. I will not tell you that these phones will rival a good 5.1 speaker setup; (maybe not even a bad setup for that matter) but, I don't believe that was their intended purpose. Let's face it...nothing beats a good subwoofer for earth shattering, wake-the-neighbors BASS! But, if you don't want to register on the Richter scale (or have your neighbors call the cops at 11:00 PM) then I strongly suggest you audition the Sony MDR-DS5000 wireless headphone system. Oh, did I mention that the system works equally well for general music listening?

Light weight; Powerful Logic 3D processing for that much wanted psychoacoustic effect; Balance, volume and auto-on/off controls incorporated into headset.

Weaknesses:
IR rather than RF transmission. Not DTS capable (as if that matters).

-gives convincing out-of-the-head sound from headphones
-weak bass from supplied cordless headphones, but slightly better with Grado SR-60 corded headphones plugged into the headphone jack
-terrible sounding with music CD sources; the DSP murders the sound quality; the sound is tinny, harsh, with little depth and no bass, like an early 80's CD player
-acceptable sounding with DVD movies with AC-3 (Dolby Digital) encoding, though bass is still weak; voices sometimes tend to have an unnatural digital quality
-sound quality not in the league of good Dolby digial receiver / surround speakers / subwoofer system but makes a viable option if space/neighbours prohibit a real surround speaker configuration.
-a bit expensive for about US$500

I just purchased the NEW Sony MDR-S5000'S and believe me they are not your ordinary headphones.They are a well thought out piece of equipment that anyone looking for a serious set of headphones should consider this new technology. According to Sony that list out at 549.00 with a street price of 499.99. I was fortunate enough to buy my set at 399.99 which they had jusy put out on display 2 days before.
The digital surround sound is unbelievable. The headphones are extremely comfortable and can be worn with great freedom of movement. A demonsreation is a must.
