Strength:

I inherited these speakers and have only recently set them up with a Denon amp. Blown away quite honestly. High to mid ranges are crystal clear and the bass is very natural sounding. Punchy and not overpowering, I’ve been using them as studio speakers in my recording studio but now moved them into my lounge to replace my old pioneer system, the sound improvement is significant. They fill the room at low levels and blow the room away when pumped up. The clarity throughout the range is excellent. Crystal clear. I was initially planning on selling them so set them up to test but no chance are these leaving my house any time in the near future.

Weakness:

I can’t think of any negatives! Perhaps the size compared to newer, more compact speakers? but I think the size also creates a warmth that is often lacking with the newer “precision” compacts.

Strength:

Highs and midrange is clear and detailed. Sound imaging is very good too. Price

Weakness:

Lacks deep and loud bass, plan on getting a subwoofer.

The mercury 3 have very good high and midrange sound, along with a decent sound imaging. The only area I see the mercury 3 lacking in is bass. They do produce tight bass but not deep or loud enough in my opinion, but that is to be expected with a speaker with only a 6 inch woofer I guess. I purchased a velodyne subwoofer a few weeks ago and that really filled in the bass defiencies of the tannoys nicely. Now my stereo sounds alot better. So in part, I recommend the tannoy mercury 3, but do youself a favor and purchase a nice sub to go along with them.

Strength:

Powerful bass, music seeems to flow through these speakers no matter what type or style.Nice laid back sound not too piercing or sharp.

Weakness:

none at this pricepoint

I find the Tannoys unbelievable value for money when it comes to a very competent sound in both music and movies.I found them ideal with a Yamaha home cinema amp as I have experienced both the Yamaha DSPA592 and now currently using the Yamaha RXV795A both of which are considered bright sounding which I find ideal with these laid back speakers. When I used the Sony STRD940 receiver the bass was much more intense. The Tannoys have a nice cherry effect at the front ideal with wooden floors.Whilst not being magnetically shielded I had to place them a few inches in front of the t.v. screen in case of magnetic staining. These speakers sound better when the foam bungs are in place as the bass seems more tight compared to taking the bungs out when there is more air than bass effects.I find they sound slightly more powerful when moved away from walls and given room to breathe.Action movies sound astonishing especially when there are loud sequences such as explosions as the Tannoys can more than handle the bass.Equally for a budget speaker there is a great deal of power.I have no intentions of replacing these speakers in the near future as I would highly recommend them to anyone who appreciates a quality product for a quality price.

I possess a pair of Tannoy Mercury M3 from about one year. These speakers are far from perfect, but they sounds exceptionally well for the price. Sound is natural, bass is powerful ad sufficiently controlled and extended, treble is extended and reasonably clean. I found that, due to the light cabinet, the M3 tend to "boom" a little with very strong bass tracks. The tweeter seems to have some non linearity in it's response because actually the mid/treble is a bit too strong. The M3 don't like to sound too loud, if you turn-up the volume too much the sound becomes a mess, but at a reasonable level these speakers are really good, probably the best choice for the price.

Strength:

Excellent musical sound for price and discrete size.

Weakness:

None, really, at the price - Midrange is relatively weak for classical music.

Although I appreciate the technology behind my system, I still pay more attention to the music than the technical aspects. But I do own over 1,000 discs, cassettes and albums, so I care. Decided to ditch old, elephant-size system and lighten up the room. System consists of Yamaha AX-592 amp, Tannoy M3's (on 30-inch hardwood sand-filled bases) and older Sansui single-CD player.

The M3's were expensive for their size (in Canada, where an Accord is close to luxury), but despite their bookshelf size, they really wake up the neighbors and do a fine job at tolerable volumes. Note these are not for large rooms and big dancing parties! I attended to details such as room size, drapery and carpeting to get the most out of the small units.

With the money I saved, I can buy more music - that's what it's all about.
