Bottom Line:
Well I have listened to hundreds and owned tens of speakers. First of all, without any nostalgia factor entering, let me say most anything from the golden years of Speakerlab is underestimated,
The 7 series is IMHO on of the greatest speakers ever ( unless we to to $10000 and up speakers. The 7s have the reputation to be a rock speaker, which they are but the have detail for the finest piano solos of Debussy. Any of the 7 series is a GO>
The good news is that as they are from the Seattle and sales were done around their stores in Seattle, they are not well known and very under-appreciated thus making it possible to pick up a pair for a song.

The speakerlab 7.1's are such a undiscovered treat! I luckily found mine for $200.00 used. The bass is the most attractive part of the speakers and sound huge. The highs could be more clear but still sound good. I recommend looking for a set. They would be worth the new price too. I am replacing them with the k horns!

Bottom Line:
I haven't heard these SL 7.1. My family has had a pair of SpeakerLab 7 cabinets since 1975. At that time, they supposedly cost $450 a piece. The whole kit weighs 165lbs per cabinet from what some Blue Book I found says. These speakers come with a 12" subwoofer, a 10" woofer, a midrange horn, and a liquid cooled tweeter that weighs around 16lbs. They also came with built in crossovers, and insulation; and they were already assembled by the company. These speakers have been played at concert levels since 1975, and today we use them as our main L?R speakers for our surround sound. To date, I have never heard a better sounding speaker kit. They have a great full sound. They literally shake everything in the house, and you can listen to them outdoors, a block a way, without ever developing a problem. If these SL 7.1s are anything like the 7s, then you will definately get your money's worth from them.

i can't beleive this product does not have more write ups than i've found. i wanted a pure loadspeaker to handle the sansui 9090 receiver i have toted around for 25 tears. i found it in the speakerlab sl7.1, i have listened to virtually every speaker on the market ranging from $4000 and down. this speaker puts most of them to shame. for under $1,000 i put these together and finished the solid oak cabinets to my own liking. i could not be happier,
