Nice ambient sound in dipole mode, still has good directional sound for effects in 5.1.

Not the strongest on the bass, but with a 5 1/4" woofer what do you expect?

I got these as an open-box buy from Circuit City, paid $100 for the pair. Replaced Polk RT3 monopoles as surrounds, added to RT55 fronts and CS400 center, was using a Polk PSW120 sub, but moving to a Velodyne CT100 for more oomph.

After reading about the advantages/disadvantages of dipoles vs. monopoles as surrounds, I decided to give these a shot. I have been very impressed with the enveloping feel the RT/fx's give me, compared to the RT3s. My main concern with the fx's was that some of the directional effects in 5.1 tracks would be less noticeable than with monopoles. This has proven not to be the case. While still feeling more like I'm inside the action with DVDs using the RT/fx's, directional effects are still very directional. Overall, they're a big improvement over the RT3s.

The RT/fx's aren't quite as impressive with music as they are for HT, but I'm still very satisfied with them. They do a good job with the 5-channel Stereo DSP mode on my Onkyo TX-DS676 receiver. Overall, for the price I paid, I feel like I got a steal.

These make you feel like you're surrounded by the action when in Dolby 5.1. Amazing for the price, I have them paired with Polk RT400's and a CS245 with an Onkyo TX-DS555 powering them. Polk Audio is a great product. Value and they sound good!

Better than normal directional surrounds.

I must say, I am just learning what real sound reproduction is. I just purchased a pair of RT/fx polks for surround speakers, but connected that way did not do the speakers any justice. I disconnected the speakers from the surround outs and hooked them to the main outs for stereo, they sound great to my ear. The 4 1/2" speaker really punch nice and reproduce voices great, but the real highlight is the two tweaters in each cabinet. Connected with my old speakers for a solid bass, it satisfies me. I like rock and good singing. As I said, I am just learning. I read other reveiws about polks that read they are too bassy and the tweaters blow easily. These are not too bassy and I hope the tweaters don't blow. Can someone tell me what they think. I purchased them at circuit city who have a full value exchange policy and I plan to exchange them for the RT/500 with a six inch mid-bass if I don't hear anything better to my ear.

Very clear highs, smooth & natural sounding. Great sound dispersion in dipole/bipole modes.

Build quality.

Had a chance to pick up a pair of these at a runout cheap price. Only colour available was white which suited me anyway. Disappointed to find that the bass driver in the right surround crapped itself right out of the box. Was impressed however with the tweeters, very clear & natural sounding highs. Not at all harsh or fatiguing. A friend also purchased the same set at another store only to have to replace both tweeters within a couple of days. Must have been a bad batch made as they were from the same stock. This unfortunately must detract from the rating, other than the obvious build quality or lack thereof they are a great surround, if not outdated speaker. They sound great in dipole & bipole modes. Unless you can get them at a steal price, go for the current versions e.g. FX300i, FX500i etc etc.

Good sound quality, highs, midrange. Dipole/Bipole switchable. Good for diffuse or direct sound in dolby pro logic... even better in DTS and Dolby Digital.

No solid bass.

Well I must say that they are some of the best surround speakers short of being THX certified. They produce clear sound in Dolby Digital and are very good at diffuse in Pro Logic.
The guy above me seems to be using them for the absolute wrong purpose, as main speakers. These speakers are to be used as SURROUND ONLY. Sure, you can hook it up in front, but that's obviously messed up, they are meant to be surrounds.
Any who, they're great speakers, and I got them for $200 a pair at Sight n' Sound.. if you see them that cheap buy em, you'll love em.
