Bought these without knowing much about the speaker and origins . However I was using these with my mf M6i dual mono amplifier, the amp does push out a lot of low end ! These speakers do not need mega low end power as they do utilise it’s own dedication, yes you do need massive current /power to make these work . So pick your amp wisely as you will be trying new amps .bass is silky smooth and goes deep , depending what you listen too. Vocals are magic , and right in front of you . I’m lucky to still have the Manual and original box .Currently using a roksan k3 @ 150w per/ch and they work fine , in the future I will go down the separate dual mono path . These suite jazz instrumentals, ambient techno , blues .

Not a speaker for rock music .

I was finally financially able to get the equipment I wanted last year and searched high and low to replace the Klipsch KG4s that had served me so well since college. I was looking for a mini-monitor due to my apartment dweller status and set 2.5K as my ceiling. I tested every monitor in the book...from the NHT Super Ones to the PROAC tablettes...to the Joseph Audio RM7is to the Castle line from England. From the Martin Logan Aerius series to Audio Physic (a little north of 2.5K but what the heck) My one and only requirement for a speaker...I wanted the hair on the back of my neck to stand up when I played Cassandra Wilson. I want the highest highs and the lowest lows. I want punch, accuracy and my speaker to be able to throw an awesome soundstage. Of all the speakers I tested, NONE made the hair stand on my neck like the Platinums. None. I'm not even that thrilled with the looks, preferring an all wood construction ala the Dynaudios or Harbeths. Oh yeah, I even tried the vaunted studio monitor from Legacy Audio (traveling all the way to Oakland CA to hear them) and was disappointed. Trust me...the solos are an amazing buy. You will not be sorry...find your nearest dealer today.

Sound stage, laid back highs, wonderful midrange, amazing bass for a speaker this size. Beautiful to look at.

I bought these on the internet for $900 delivered. Initially I used them with an Acurus 150A 150 watt per
channel amp. They sounded pretty good, not as analytical as the Thiels, but they had a better sound stage and more bass. The bass was boomy and not as clear and defined as
the Thiels. I expected that since the Solos are a ported box. The Solos seemed to convey the joy and life of the music played through them.
A year later I picked up a McCormack DNA-1 amp (175+watts per channel) and a TLC-1 McCormack preamp to replace the
Acurus Amp and preamp(L-11). What a difference this made!
All of a sudden the Black part of the sound stage was completely silent and the resolution of the instruments and their positioning became much more precise. Still the music that came forth was full of life.

A year later I finally put the Matching Platinum Solo Stands together. I had bought these over the internet from a different person than the person I bought my speakers from. This was not my best purchase. He sent them in a box, in pieces and they rattled, scraped, and scratched from Las Vegas to Rochester N.Y. That is why it took me a year to put them together. I repainted them with Krylon Semi Flat Black paint. (perfect match) I digress. I filled them with sand and bolted the speakers to the stand. Again what a difference this made. No more booming bass, much tighter and the sound stage resolution is much better still.

My next step will be to bi-wire them to the McCormack. I have some Kimber 4TC for the highs and will try to pick up some 8TC for the low end. The sound is wonderful now but I
think it will be even better.

These are great speakers, but you do need the right equipment to make them sound the best. They deserve it, that's why I give them a five out of five.

Bought a pair of solos w/stands last feb.1998. I have had 10 different pairs of speakers in my system over the years(snells,vandersteens,classic wharfedales etc.etc)but nothing comes comes closen to the performance of these speakers.they are incredibly involvingly musicaly accurate & I sometimes find myself listening till 4:00am in the morning.My only gripe is the solos tend to be a little laid back in the midrange.These speakers seem to have almost perfect synergy with the rest of my system but do require a lot of juice,(current amp-B&K Ex442 Sonata series 200 rms amp)!

Require a powerful amp of well over a 100 watts per channel due to its 6 ohm 84 db specifications.

I have only had these in my system a couple of days and they have made a lasting impression already. I bought these used at Fidelis Audio in N.H for a great price and the owner said these are a very good speaker if you have the required power to drive them. I just recently purchased an Odyssey Stratos amp and there seems to be great synergy between this amp,the solo's and my Sony x777es player going directly into the amp and controlled by its variable outputs. I had Morel Preludes previous to the solo's and always experienced the woofer bottoming out. The solo requires a lot of juice, but it can also handle massive amounts of power for a small speaker due to its rather low efficiency. The speaker is very musical with a wide and deep soundstage. It handles micro and macro dynamics as good as anything I've heard. There are other reviews at this site stating that they stay up late into the night listening to these because the transparency of the solo's let you hear details into the recording that you thought were never there! These speakers are very dynamic and can be played with any type of music from classical to Roger Waters and can handle the hard rock of Metallica. These have a fit and finish you can be proud to own and there sound is simply astonishing! I have the matching Platinum stands. When I get a chance to fill them with sand they will only sound better. I give these a 5 star rating at their old retail price of $2500 + $390 for the stands for value and there amazing performance.

Oh man…this speaker has always been my dream bookshelf ever since I set an eye and ear on it a few years back. I have been using the Acoustic Energy AE-1 for the past 5 years and upgraded to series-2 a year ago but disappointed by the lack of improvement!.This triggers me to look for another Speaker and actually listed to the above similar products. And now, a few of the Platinum Solo are floating in the used market, like bubbles, it's gone in just like that. I'm one of the lucky one who manage to get this super mini bookshelf, designed by the same designer of AE-1, Mr. Phil Jones. When I first hook it up to my system, there's no doubt, the performance of the SOLO far exceeds the AE-1 or the series 2 for that matter. As one review wrote ' You no longer hear the cold and rough metal sound and the unemotional feel in the treble, and there is much more bass and transient performance'. I bought the Solo for just under a grand. Easily the best Monitor around regardless of price. A reference? Definitely!. As they say, ' Like a mirror, it honestly reflects the characteristics of your amplifier'. But just a reminder, if you intend to place this speaker in a large room, you should get an above average amplifier to drive this
