Great sound until the sub surround started to lose its elasticity. Well when I decided to replace two of the subs I was astounded to find that the bottom subs in each tower is a dummy sub woofer!!!!!! The upper is real, the bottom is not!!!! Really? $600.00 a pair to be dooped with some crap like this. I feel cheated!!!!

The person below doesnt appear to be that accurate of a reviewer, I think his marks for this speaker really belong to ubid.com. Dont come trash a speaker if you have not even listened to them.

Strength:

none

Weakness:

sound, cabinet quality, binding posts, ugly looks, bulky cabinets that cannot reproduce the sound that a comparable speaker by a real speaker company can

The bass on these speakers is not tight. The passive radiator reproduces slow boomy bass characteristic of a bose subwoofer. There is no way this speaker goes down to 30hz, well maybe at -30db. All of the materials used in this speaker are cheap. Bose even has higher build quality than this. These speakers make both male and female vocals sound chesty and muffled. Horns sound harsh and shrill. I wish I had some way of giving these speakers are 0, because they don't even deserve a 1.

Strength:

punchy base, clear highs (when they work)

Weakness:

power handling?

I've owned four of these towers for the past 3+ years, and in the beginning I was extremely happy with them. Last summer, I bought a new Denon 3801 receiver to replace my JVC one, and now I can't quit blowing the tweeters and mids. So far I've blown the tweeters in all of the towers a combined total of 7 times and also the mids in two of them. I really don't think that these speakers can handle the power that they are rated at. The tweeters even blow when the speakers are playing cleanly (no distortion whatsoever). If you have a low power amp (<100 watts of quality power) these speakers should preform great, but if you have a high end amp plan on having them in the shop every month.

These are great speakers that have held up very well. I purchased them for 120 dollars, and absolutely love them. Highs and lows are very clear, and also delievers good home theater sound.

Strength:

They put the tweeters/mids up where they need to be in a home theater system

I just got these on Ubid.com for $67/each + $20 shipping. (refurbished) They are used primarily for home theater. They are worlds better than the old 8" three-way no-name speakers I had. I also have a JBL DPS-10 150 watt subwoofer, and it died a couple of days after I got the 181s. I was wondering if the sub was redundant after getting these towers. Now that the sub is in the shop I know that a sub is virtually a necessity for decent home theater. Although the 181s handle some very low frequencies, Dolby Digital 5.1 really utilizes the LFE (Low Frequency Effects) channel. This takes a big load off of the mains too, and allows them to punch clear, crisp sound out without muddying the lows. Now I'm looking for a JBL center to replace my cheap KLH.

Strength:

excellent, tight base. nice highs and mids and lows.

Weakness:

none

These speakers don't look like much, physically, but they really blow you away when you listen to them. They really do sound great. Excellent deal at Ubid.com. Got them for $77 each. You can't find a better speaker for twice the price. These speakers are awesome. The design is kind of plain though, but thats not important. Excellent speakers!!

Strength:

Crisp clear sound with tight bass

Weakness:

None really

I've had my TLX-20:s for about 8 years now (the same as tlx-181 i think) and they are the only things that have worked without a flaw in my entire system. I even had 2 pairs for a brief period but had to sell one when I moved to a smaller apartment. JBL is the only word you have to remember when buying speakers (or so I think anyway), and the TLX 181 is a bargain...
