Strength:

Great remote, great picture, great sound, great price.

Weakness:

Sometimes, very rarely, if I use scene selection to skip to a certain scene, the sound will cut out for a split second at some random point in the scene.

I've owned quite a few DVD players, Toshiba, Pioneer, JVC, etc. While I can't test the progressive scan picture of this player yet, I can say that the picture is brighter than my previous players. Blacks are solid while still showing detail. As for the sound, I definitely hear a clearer separation between speakers, and a deeper, drier bass. Even pro logic (which I only hear during the menus) actually sounds good, whereas before I used to wonder why anyone would even bother listening to a pro logic track

Similar Products Used:

Toshiba SD1200 (multi-region HK purchase), Pioneer 525, JVC budget player.

Strength:

Set up is a snap. All connections are logical and clearly explained in the manual. A Photoviewer to boot!

Weakness:

None found thus far.

I'm very impressed with the performance of this unit. The remote is logical and well thought out. The progressive scan is super and on my HDTV monitor gives a vibrant picture.

Strength:

progressive scan technology. accurate movie soundtrack reproduction. nice remote lay out. Sturdy construction and pleasing to the eye.

Weakness:

no coaxial input...like who cares...optical is the way to go.

The sd3800 is a very good progressive scan dvd player. After going progressive scan, there is no going back to interlaced images...unless it's 1080i. At any rate, the movie sound tracks are very rich and percise...and I know it is not due to my reciever because it is a cheap kenwood:). I am not into music. Hence, i don't know how good this player is at playing cds. If you are strictly a movie person...great sound and great images await you with this player

Strength:

Has all the features you are looking for in a DVD player. Great remote. Good price.

Weakness:

Not compatible with all DVD formats.

When it comes to Video I am sold on Toshiba quality and perfomance. With my recent purchase of this DVD I was expecting nothing less from other previous modles (SD3109) I have owned. This DVD player has all the features you are looking for in a DVD player and more! This modle even allows you to view your JPEG pictures from your CDs. The remote control is very ergonomic. And now the let down... I have recently discovered that the Toshiba SD3800 has a problem with compatibility! This DVD player doesn't play all formats of DVDs, if you watch DVDs other than English titles you are bound to run in this issue. Several of my DVDs would work in my SD3109 (4 yrs old) where as they wouldn't in my brand new SD3800. It was a big disapointment. I called Toshiba SVC and they tried to right off as pirated or poor quality DVDs. I thought differently and did my own expeiment, went to the same A & B and tested in a new SD3800 and got the same result, tried it in a SD4800 and still didn't work. Tried the SD1800 (lower modle) and it worked fine !!! I also tried it in other DVD brands such as SONY, JVC and Panasonic and the DVD worked fine in all. So I ended up returning the SD3800 and picked up the Panasonic RP62 DVD player... not as advanced as the Toshiba, paid more money, not so great remote but it works with all my DVDs. So if you watch DVDs other than English titles, let me save you the run around
