Strength:

Worth it's weight in pennies

Weakness:

Not worth the plastic it's encased in...

This unit has finally died on me. I have always had minor problems with it. Sometimes the DVD would not pick up until it was removed and inserted again. The unit itself is very sluggish as well. It would sometimes take up to two minutes for a DVD to initalize new out of the jewel box. The FF and RW stunk. It has now finally died and will not pick up any more DVDs. CDs work fine, but I have a krell player for that since I primarily listen to 2-channel audio. The first, and last Japanese product I buy. Maybe Accuphase at some point, but thats $8k+. Sticking to Krell from now on. Thanks to Toshiba for discontinuuing this poorly engineered unit. It's going in the garbage tonight....whew....I feel better

Strength:

Lots of features.

Weakness:

MP3 display poor. Very slow response time. Crappy remote. Closed captioning defaults to on. Can break easily.

I am generally very happy with this unit. The picture quality, especially using progressive scan is quite good and the feature set on the player is pretty good as well. While VCDs will play on this unit, SVCDs will not. I would like to point out one other item. I have heard a lot of people complain that their unit broke on them after a short time or that their units arrived broken. I think I know why. The day I set up my home theater, my two year old son decided to close the DVD tray by pushing it in hard. This caused the gears to skip and from that point on my player would not function properly. As an engineer by trade, I decided to take apart the unit and try to fix it. After completely disassembling the carriage assembly, realigning the tray, and reassembling the DVD player it came back to life. Three months later, a good friend of mine (who happens to own the non-progressive scan version) had the same thing happen to him (it was his 3 year old daughter who did this). Since I had already fixed mine, it took me only about 15 minutes to fix his. The carriage/tray is obviously not a very robust design, but I speculate that most of the DOA reports that are reported are “jammed in” trays.

Strength:

good picture and sound for the price

Weakness:

a tad slow between operations

This is the second Toshiba palyer that I have bought. So far I am very pleased with the SD-3755. Picture, sound and other features are all equal with similar players in this price range. I have noticed that in the last year the price for this unit has been dropping,I would not pay more than $ 175, since this years version the SD-3805 is going for $ 199.

Strength:

It looked kinda pretty.

Weakness:

It R.I.P.ed in less than a year!

After 11 months of average use, this player died a miserable death. How can my 15 year old Denon CD player still perform flawlessly and this and other new DVD/CD players last for such a brief time? And my Denon has never needed its lense cleaned either. Something is wrong here.

Strength:

Pricepoint. Progressive scan. MP3''s.

Weakness:

Slow. MP3''s. Remote.

Got this unit b/c I wanted a carousel DVD, so it could also replace an old cd player that I had. Progressive scan & MP3 capability were a plus. As a bonus, the silver matched my tv color. The picture quality is more than adequate. I can''t say it''s unbelievable, but for <$250 it holds up quite well. Nice menus in that you can turn on/off progressive scan for testing. Haven''t seen anything on the model which would not allow me to recommend it as a good above-average carousel. MP3 functionality is a nice plus, but... Still have to deal with the stupid DOS 8.3 format. Another but: while it does recurse through all sub directories, it places all mp3''s on the root. Cute I guess in that it alphabetizes them, but at 8.3 filenames, it becomes rather aggravating fishing for something specific. Extra-slow on boot. Takes it''s time recognizing dvd''s/cd''s when changing discs. Although, it does have that nifty little "disc exchange" feature where you can change discs on the fly without interrupting what''s playing. Remote is *really* flimsy.

Strength:

5 disc carousel, multi-format compatibility.

Weakness:

Unit is slow to respond to signals from the remote.

All in all I am pleased. The five disc tray is a nice feature and the video output on a non HD tv is very good. I have not used the progressive scan as I don''t have a HD TV yet. The unit does seem a bit slow to respond to signals from the remote though. For the money, this is a good DVD player.

Strength:

5 disc player, CD-R(W), MP3 player. Nice setup menu. Silver color makes unit cosmetically appealing. Best 5 disc DVD DTS unit for the money

Weakness:

Not as sharp as high end players, carriage is slightly noisy.

I bought this product to replace a Toshiba 9000 that crapped out on me (almost shattering my faith in Toshiba quality). I like the 5 disc functionality of it playing DVD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW & MP3. Installation was a breeze and I have to say the new GUI menu for this is outstanding. Though the picture is not quite as sharp as the 9000 that it replaced, it''s hardly anything major and definitely not worth the price jump. Watched A.I. the first night and was pleased. Had no trouble playing CD-r''s that were burned by first generation burners. Paired with a Toshiba big screen, the results are awesome. Worth the money, especially if you can find it like I did on Ubid.
