Strength:

Play SACD's DVDA's DVD's & CD's !

Weakness:

none at this price !

Why so many here complain about this unit is beyond me. I own 3 of them. And yes they all work as they should. Dvi will not work unless you set it up in the menu and there are two modes A or B depending on the HDCP encoding of your TV, So A may work for some and B for others. READ the manual!. Also this unit can output up conversion via component with a hack code entered.
Play SACD's DVDA's DVD's & CD's !
Personally think it looks better through component with upscaling, DVI can look a little dark on some TV's, But hay it only around a $100 bucks !

Strength:

Eye Candy

Weakness:

Romote too complicated.

Purchased a refurb unit. First one defective, draw would not open. Quickly replaced with no hassel, free pick up and redeliver. Unit is hook up to Dell 24" display on DVI input. The dell is 1920 resolution. Video is stunning. Tried over twn DVD's. I purchased this unit to play in the PIP feature of the Dell while I am using the computer. Works fine. I've owner $25 DVD players and $500 DVD players (Denon). The Samsung beats them all. Part of the reason I purchased this unit is that it is fairly easy to hack. Since that is always dicy, I will do so before the warranty expires, 90 days.

Weakness:

The firmware of this device is not as advanced as my Pioneers. For example it will not tell me how much time is left in a movie. Basically it is short on info for the viewer.

I don't know why there are so many negative reviews of this product. I picked this up for $60CDN at Futureshop. Not open box, No box! No remote either. I updated to Sammy's latest firmware on their website and programmed my Harmony 680 to control it. The picture on my Samsung DLP through the DVI input is outstanding. Absolutely the best buy I have ever made.

I also have a Pioneer DV-260 which is very good at 480P over component but the picture quality is noticeably below what the HD841 produces.

Strength:

None except for esthetics. The unit looks good with clean lines and a nice low profile.

Weakness:

A defective DVD player design that does not operate reliably. The reliablity issues of this unit make it impossible to comment on video output quality characteristics.

I purchased the HD841 unit to take advantage of the promise of DVD high definition and digital DVI output for on an HD capable LCD TV. Unfortunately, this Samsung unit has been a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT. From day one, there were reliability problems. It frequently wouldn't recognise DVDs; or it would suddenly stop recognizing a DVD while playing. Often it wouldn't eject the disc or sometimes would eject with the DVD still spinning in the tray. By the third week, the player stopped working completely. I returned it to the store for servicing. After 4 weeks, it was returned. It initially played, but stopped recognizing the first DVD movie halfway through. THIS IS A VERY BAD PRODUCT. The poor reliablity of the unit over-rides any comment to be made on the video output characteristics. It is inferior to other DVD players costing half as much. Shame on Samsung. This is a product that should never have been produced. The company should make a general recall of all HD841 units. It is obviously a defective design.

Strength:

Like the upconvertion feature so I am still hanging on.

Weakness:

The night and darker scenes are really dark. When a cheap DVD player is hooked up to my Toshiba 51H84 the dark scenes are better than with the HD841.

Disappointment. The night and darker scenes are really dark.

Strength:

plays SACDs (until it won't power up anymore)

Weakness:

DVI is pathetic. Nothing noteworthy about the component output. Won't power up after 2 weeks.

This came new in the box. Everything worked except the DVI connection. Boght it mostly for the SACD player. After 2 weeks, I could not get the CD out of it because the power would only come on for 2 or 3 seconds then the unit would turn off. I tried unplugging and plugging it back in to no avail. Got one of my precious SACDs inside, and can't get it out. EBAY seller said to contact Samsung. I'm probably just $139 wiser.

Strength:

None I could find.

Weakness:

DVI output worst than component output! Remote is terribly weak.

I bought this as an open box at Future Shop. My Toshiba TV have DVI input so I was excited to see the "ultimate" in image quality. What a disapointment. The picture was fine in "component" output but was terrible and grainy in DVI. I took it back 3 hours after I bought it!

Strength:

Picture quality was good on the days it decided to work.

Weakness:

Where should I start? How much time do you have??

Everything posted by the other users describes very well all of the features and nuances of this product. We purchased this unit in late November (as an "open box" buy. BIG mistake. The unit has been in the shop about 1/3 of the time that we've owned it. It's my first DVD player (we're just coming out of the stone ages) and so far it has been a very bad experience. We're using this with a SONY 30" widescreen WEGA T.V. and so far the two units have not gotten along. Not sure if there's a compatibility issue between the two components or it's because the DVD player is just THAT bad. The first time in for a repair the picture would intermittantly come on and off, with sound. We had to jump on the floor or tap the unit to get the picture to come back on. Eventually, the picture wouldn't come on at all. It went back for repair. The 2nd time, the picture would go black intermittantly with the sound still working. It went back for repair. We just got it back, plugged in all the RGB cables, the unit turned on, now NO sound and NO picture!! It is now back for repair #3. Samsung was not helpful at all when I called them about the unit and wanted to charge me a stupid amount of money to repair the unit because it was an "open box" buy. They then referred me back to the dealer. So far it's been a nightmare trying to get this thing to work, I regret the purchase. Granted, it was an open box but c'mon, could it at least work for longer than a 2 week stretch??? When it was working, the picture was really good. We're now looking for a back-up DVD player anticipating this thing to break down again. After the 3rd time the dealer is supposed to replace or refund our $$. I don't want another one of these units, PLEASE, not ANOTHER one!! NOOOOOoooooooo!!! If Audio Review would allow us to give a "0" rating - I would.
