Onkyo DV S555 DVD Players

Onkyo DV S555 DVD Players

DESCRIPTION

The DV-S555 is proof you don't have to empty your pocketbook to get high-end picture and sound quality. It's also another good example of how Onkyo gives you more useful features for your money. Case in point: while all DVD players can play CDs, only a rare few can play CD-Rs and CD-RW discs. And fewer can play CDs that hold MP3 coded files. This means you can play over your home-theater system the MP3 file that you downloaded - up to 10 hours or more of music on a single disc, depending on the bit rate of the MP3 files. The DV-S555 will display MP3 filenames on your TV screen, and you can program a play list of up to 60 songs from the same disc. Other notable features include the latest 192kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converters (for all channels) to provide cleaner, clearer sound from all your DVDs and CDs, and an Onkyo developed Direct Digital Path to deliver a noise-free digital signal that's less susceptible to flux. There's even a dedicated subwoofer pre out to allow those without a home theater system to enjoy dynamic movie sound from just their TV.

Strength:

Been reliable and plays everything as long as the discs are burned properly.

Weakness:

When it was on sale in shops no weaknesses, but nowadays it does not sound quite as good as current good quality dvd players, however I doubt anyone would notice unless they used a dedicated cd player to compare it with.

I am writing this review for those( like me) that search out good buys.
Full store price was $999. I paid $545
The onkyo DV S555 dvd player was, when I purchased it in approx 2003 back then the best value for money unit I could find at the time. It looks great has had no issues at all and for those that like their music cd 's it sounds pretty good with cd play back. I purchased the unit based upon reviews of its cd playback qualities as well as its dvd playback qualites and it has served me well. It has burr brown dacs on all channels and plays MP3 burnt discs unlike most units available at the time in that price range.
The sound quality with cd playback is not quite up there with current dvd players or even older good quality dedicated cd players, but it excells at detail and tight bass sound. I actually preferred it over a Rotel 965bx cd player (which still sell for more used) for its tighter detailed sound, however some may prefer the smoother souund of the Rotel. As far as dvd playback goes I have not had the desire to change to any other dvd player and I will be using it until I need a blu ray player.

Strength:

great performance during the less 1year of used

Weakness:

IT HANGS UP!!! SUDDENLY STOP WHEN PLAYING CD'S,VCD'S AND IT EJECT BY ITSELF WHEN PLAYING!!! WHAT A MESS

I used the product for more than 1 year and nothing got me a problem but nowadays, when i play some original music cd's, and some recorded music cd's, it began to hang up specially in the first track of a cd. My cd collections that i have were original, scratch free and ive been using it for alomost 14 months with the onkyo dvd player but nowadays, it was started only last week and the player began to hang up. When i played my cd's it suddenly stop and sometimes it eject by itself. I was very disappointed on this product. i never thought this would happen to Onkyo coz i know onkyo were built for durability and good built, but i was wrong when my player began to hang up. Hope this could give some ideas for some consumer out there, but im not sure if anyone also experience this. What a big disappoinment coz warranty is for 1year only and the trouble began for 14 months...

Strength:

Very balance colour pallet, strong details with a lack of visual grain, edges area abit rough but not that noticable, functions are standard and easy to use, remote is good but quality is very disappointing, happen to drop it once and the case split in half, got it replaced but the plastic is extremely brittle and thin.

Weakness:

Audio is below par, cannot really be used as a dedicated CD player, soundstaging is way to shallow and musical instruments sounds too metallic.

After reviewing the new group of "pro scan" DVD players out there I came to the conclusion that the S555 is the best out of the group, within its price range there are no comparisons. The weakness is somewhat on the part and comestic selection but for "videophiles" its not that important.

Strength:

Produces good sound and color, 5 year warranty.

Weakness:

Not clear whether the D/A converters are 96KHz/24 bits (in manual) or 192KHz/24 bits (in product catalog). Doesn't matter really as the 797 has the latter.

This player matched perfectly with the Onkyo TX-DS797 A/V receiver. Excellent with music and HT.

Strength:

Excellent Component Video, Both Optical and Coaxial S/PDIF, Picture quality, sound quality

Weakness:

No progressive scan output

I have really enjoyed this DVD player for the year that I have had it. I have used it with my Onkyo TX-DS787 receiver so the bad remote hasn't been a problem since I just use the really nice remote that comes with the receiver. The picture and sound quality out of this DVD player is above all others in its class. I have 4 other DVD players in my house and this one is better than the Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, and XBox one in every aspect.

Strength:

Cd audio quality, Picture are crisp, bright, excellent.

Weakness:

A bit pricey , no built in decoder , no zoom.

First of all, Im not an audiophile or an expert on this audio. I do have though some old equipments which have satisfied me and i'll be using it as a basis for my review. This dvd player so far has perform better than my old Pioneer 525 and Denon DVD 1100. The onkyo though looks like a pioneer dvd player inside bcause they have the same menu, reset code (changing from pal to ntsc, restarting the whole dvd player). Picture are crisp, like the pioneer however when it comes to sound quality, this one is better. The pioneer sounded more bright in Dolby Digital/DTS same with the CD audio quality. Against my old Denon, there's nothing wrong about that unit except that it doesn't play CDR/CDRW disc. Sound is a bit softer also on the Denon, both on CD and DVD quality. The Onkyo sounded for me "just right" not too much bass punch, but heavy enough, in additon, it has non fatiguing high frequency. Picture quality is the same as the Denon which is excellent, specially for the price. Cd quality is also good, but of course my old NAD Cd player sounded better BUT not even the Pioneer or Denon could match the Cd quality of the Onkyo. And the remote its also good.

Strength:

Top quality Fantastic audio and video

Weakness:

None!

Whenever I read a review that says "I was blown away," I have a hard time believing it. Well, believe it! This DVD player is simply amazing. I upgraded from an Onkyo DV S501 (the first-generation Onkyo DVD player). Now that I have DTS and a 96kHz A/D converter, I can hear what I''ve been missing. I can hear a marked improvement in sound quality when playing CDs on this DVD player (using the optical digital output). Also, this DVD player is whisper quiet. Both the audio and video are superb.

Weakness:

Remote control. My Toshiba remote was 100% better. You did not have to turn the lights on the find the right buttons on the remote

The Onkyo DV S555 is a cut above the run-of-the-mill DVD Players you will find on the market today. Yes you can pay more, or you can pay less, but I don''t think you will get a better value than the DV S555. It plays all formats, DVD, CD, CDR and CDRW and even other formats that I don’t even use. It also has a weighs more than the cheaper stuff you find at your local retailer. I replaced my Toshiba SD Series Model when I started to experience "pixelasion". For one reason or another my Toshiba was unable to read a couple of my DVDs. When I took my Disc to the audio electronics specialist I was told that it was due to the quality of the DVD player. When played on store Onkyo DVD player the problem disappeared. This was understandable seeing that the Onkyo Player they used was a $1,500 unit. To make a long story short, I purchased an Onkyo DV S555 from OneCall and never experienced the “pixelasion” problem again. To the normal individual, this system will give you high quality sound and picture for a reasonable price, unless you are an electronics aficionado that can even hear sounds that dogs can’t even hear. A word about OneCall.com: I ordered the unit on a Friday and I received the unit the following Tuesday. OneCall paid for the FedEx shipping and a couple of days later they called me and asked if everything was to my satisfaction. You can’t beat that!
