Review NaN of , from New Zealand

Price Paid:  $200.00 from Singapore (lucky to pick it up on holiday)

Summary:
Ive used this MD for a little over 2 years now and am pretty happy with what it is. It looks prehistoric in comparison with newer models and technologies. But technology will always advance of course.

I got it for 500 $NZ(200-250 $US) in singapore which half the actual NZ retail price.(NZ is a rip off for electronics).

Strengths
Easy to use remote control with play, stop etc. at end of remote which is more than easy to get use to.

Acceptable digital recording from cd's.

Inputs and outputs. One line in for analoug recording, mic input, digital output.

Small unit, still small enough but looks HUGE IN COMPARISON with newer models(could possibly be a weakness for some).

Sound is clear and quite detailed (supplied earphones are good but sound can be improved by upgrading to headphone or other earphones).

Weaknesses
While having a clear midrange i must say that for hip hop & drum ' n ' bass fans (and some rock fans) this is a steer clear. Bass is poor in comparison other models (as well as discmans) on the market. With weak bass you can guarantee it is distortion free!

Remote lacks a manual light option to see the display. No bass control on remote either.

Battery life is very poor (around 4 hours) and if you want it longer you have to use aa giant size battery pack that makes it the size of 1st generation sony md's!

Track labelling may become a nightmere with a lack of a jog dial as you have to repeatedly push buttons to work your way through the alphabet.(can be overcome with patientce!)

Main unit lacks backlit display.

Digital cable supplied doesnt work with sony discmans and maybe othe dismans. Have to purchase a minijack to minijack digital cable seperately.

Cannot play very loud. You can turn volume to max and still not be satisfied with volume. (sony discmans can go way louder). Must use very sensitive earphones or bear with outside noises at the same time.

I have seen worse than this so thats kind of a good sign.
I must say try before you buy!
Hope this helps.

Strengths:
easy to use remote, size(big in comparison now), clear sounding.

Weaknesses:
no bass control on remote, weak bass, battery life, takes ages to label tracks.

Review NaN of , from Newcastle upon Tyne

Price Paid:  $224.00 from Bangkok

Summary:
A great, solid little MD recorder but better products on the market now. Perhaps buy second hand, but only below £50.

Strengths:
This little recorder is fantastic. It looks good, sounds full, is easy to record to digitally and analogue, has an easy editing system, records date and time of recordings, has a clock on it, a back-lit remote control with a funky jog wheel. For the time it was produced it really is good.

Weaknesses:
Battery life (4 hrs tops) - a real shocker and the major downer with this unit. There are better products out there now with MD long play etc. - perhaps remains a good second-hamd purchase.

Similar Products Used:
MZ-R70 - an absolute pile, loads of mechanical noise, cheap feeling, slow at spinning-up, crap remote, bad menu system. Utter toss - AVOID!!

Review NaN of , from Cambridge, Ontario, Canada

Price Paid:  $351.00 from Sony Store

Summary:
Ok, I will get right down to it. This is a good minidisc, but you can buy newer and better mds. I've dropped it on concrete and it didn't even scratch. I had a problem with the battery but I took it to Sony and they gave me a new one. This md is better then the mz-r70 and Sharp's md-mt15.
The mz-r70 has a really ugly bump on the bottom of it and the sound quality isn't as good. The Sharp just sucks except for the good bass. If anything don't buy this md becuase of short battery life and it's heavy. There are much lighter and smaller mds out there. Also, you can get ones that have 3-4x as good battery life. The headphones which are supplied really suck too. This was a good unit 1 year ago but now there are better minidiscs out there if you have the money to spend...

Weaknesses:
heavy
expensive (at the time)
cheap accesories
low battery life

Similar Products Used:
mz-r91, md-mt15, mz-r70
