Strength:

Great look, heavy weight, great sound.

These speakers are great. I use them for my home recording studio to mix down tracks and I love them. Lots of bass to these.

Strength:

In a nutshell:

Small, solid, durable, dependable, both a buttonhole mount as well as screw holes for Boston Acoustis CRB mount (avail from BA), standoff feet for wall mounting, excellent dispersion of upper-mids and highs, clear, warm, rich sound.

Details:

I've owned and used these for the last 8 years.

I purchased these as replacements for my Bose 301s, the drivers of which had bitten the dust for the second time (main speaker cone had fallen to pieces for a second time). The Bose's lasted about 5 years before the material had apparently succumbed to dry rot. These have been going for 8 solid years and are still going strong.

The CR65s were barely used, but definately at a good price. I intended on trying them out as main speakers, with my subwoofer, but if they didn't pan out, to put them in the bedroom or living room.

Boy did they pan out!

With the DSP crossover set to 200 Hz, about 3 times the -3dB lower end of it's frequency response, the speakers rocked, providing excellent high-freq signal dispersion, clean highs, and warm mids. The transition from the speakers to my subwoofer was excellent.

Instead of using the rubber feet provided (which adds small black spots to the walls over time) I used sticky felt feet, available at most hardware stores.

If you're in a small college dorm room, these would be all (more than, actually) you'd need, but would scale very nicely as your dimensions increased. If you're installing them in a normal sized room, consider buying a moderate subwoofer. For home theater, you'll definately want the sub, a center channel, and two rears.

I have a 6.1 DTS-ES system, and with the clarity of the speakers, I wondered what would happen if I used 6 of them for the LF, CF, RF, L, R, and Rear channels with my Yamaha subwoofer in my average-sized, partially carpeted living room with drapes. So, I bought two more pair and tried them out.

Wow.

I watched Pearl Harbor in awe while my neighbors gritted their teeth, marvelling at the rich sphere of sound in which I was immersed while experiencing the visual presentation of the movie.

Some people may claim that a center speaker, sides, or rears needs to be of a different design than the LF and RF speakers, but I find this isn't so, as they received different information, with almost no LFE, and for the sides and especially the rears, very little mids. What your 6.1 DTS-ES or better system does need is speaker consistency, so that when the sound moves from left to right, or front to back, the most notable and characteristic portion of the sound, the highs, are consistently reproduced throughout all of your speakers. Are CR65s overkill for the rears? Yes. For the sides? (6.1 and better systems) Perhaps, but the side channels do receive some serious mid-range information, and they provided consistency throughout.

Since then, I've occasionally swapped other speakers into and out of my setup, am on my second subwoofer and my third pair of headphones, but I always wind up with my six BA CR65s.

Weakness:

The only real weakness I could find is one of volume. If you're looking for a pair to rock you and your neighbors' worlds, or if you living room is the size of most people's houses, look elsewhere. But in normal-sized living rooms and at levels listened to by normal people, even in a home theater setup, they work just fine. For my own setup, it I really want to blast either music or a movie, I simply use my $350 headphones which are more than up to the task of severely altering my hearing profile the next time I'm tested. But for normal home use, my CR65s are fine.

A very insignificant weakness is one of bass. If I were writing this in 1985, I'd say this was a serious weakness. Today, with most systems having at least 5.1 analog, and subwoofers with built-in crossovers available for every setup (including pure, two-channel stereo), it's a non-issue, and is the very reason why nearly all modern setups have smaller speakers with subwoofers, rather than trying to cram all that base in each of the two speakers.

An even less significant "weakness" (which I really hesitate to call a weakness at all) is the warmth of this speaker. It's design, component matching, and porting are excellent and reproduce sounds accurately. A friend whom I would call an "audiophile" said that they did not reproduce the full timbre of a music ensemble or orchestra, as did his speakers (which I find are somewhat shrill). While they may not have reproduced what the conductor hears, the CR75s, in my opinion, faithfully reproduced the ensemble in a manner as to what you'd hear if you were sitting in the audience, and I've been to my share of plays and orchestral presentations (including Boston Pops!). So, I'd say if you're a shrill-loving audiophile, look elsewhere. But if you just like good sound at low to medium volumes, look no further.

I've owned these speakers for 8 years - one pair for the first 2 years, then two more pair for the last 6 years.

The Boston Acoustic CR65s provide great sound in a small but very durable and versatilly-mountable package. For medium-sized rooms they're best used with an LFE (subwoofer) system, and since each can handle up to 100 W, match them with an amp that can handle that much, per speaker (not that you'd actually play it at more than about 15W per speaker, but matching is important). If you're a shrill-loving audiophile, look elswhere. But if you're into faithful, accurate reproduction of music or theater of a volume ranging from background to moderately loud, these are great speakers.

Customer Service

I bought them used, and have never needed Customer Service. I did purchase a pair of mounting brackets from BA over the phone. BA was quick and courteous, and the brackets arrived a few days later.

Strength:

Small Size and smooth response. Easy to mount on most speaker stands.

Weakness:

Fairly heavy so you need a good stable set of stands.

Being a Klipsch fanatic I had low expections. The speaker surprised me when used with a new HDTV. The modest price was the draw. They are an excellent for satelite use on TVs. The have a reasonably smooth high end and both units test nearly identical with a small 7-9 Khz 4 db drop. They lack true deep bass but are vastly superior to the HDTV self contained speakers. They would benifit from a subwoofer.
I was so impressed that I bought a second pair.
