Strength:

Price, picture quality

One of the better projection T.V.'s for the price($1400.00 @Best Buy). However, I cannot complain having only paid $800.00 for an open item(the way to go). I must admit, it is tedious to get the optimum configuration. I love the two s-video and f-type inputs. The remote is inadequate due to limitations for other components such as satelite.

Connections, Price, Size

Weakness:

None so far

Overall a very good preformer.
Excellent input/output options.
Great image using the color stream inputs for DVD.
Very good image from DSS via S-Video.
Image is OK from cable. (CATV is only OK on any RPTV)
Sound is good for a TV but it's not a replacement for a surround system.

I looked at the SONY 43" but at $100.00 less I decided to go with the Toshiba's larger screen size. Tough choice as SONY generally has a more sharp and focused image but it also has a darker picture. Depends on your picture source.
The Toshiba's features and image are far better than most of the RPTV's in this price range

Strength:

nice jackpack, great brand name, well priced.

Weakness:

automatic convergence would be nice.

First of all I would like to comment on the poor review posted by a fellow from Regina Canada. You have to realize that when you buy a grey market television from an unauthorized Toshiba dealer, you are bound to run into problems.

Attention all readers!!!! If you can afford it, you should buy a progressive scan television. Would it have made sense to buy a black and white television, when colour tv was coming out? All of us couch potatoe television watchers are being introduced into the crazy world of digital. This means our major network stations will be pumping out 500 lines of resolution in a digital signal. You are looking at 240 lines on your 10 year old 19" tube. Anything but a progressive scan television will not produce the image as clearly as it should be. But not everyone can afford the technology. (about double that of a regular projection tv.) Welcome to my world and to the Toshiba 50V61.

For the price you pay for this television ,and the newer model (Toshiba A60) you are getting a whole lot of TV, for very little money. Reading readers polls will tell you that Toshiba rates among the best for reliability. ex. www.consumersearch.com This television is packed with features like component, dual tuner picture in picture, universal backlit remote, front av inputs, a couple of s-video inputs, and some sort of crazy lens system in the crt's that gives this TV the best brightness and picture detail that I saw on any of the other televisions I looked at! (In this price range of course.) If you have a couple of thousand dollars to spend on a home entertainment monitor, this should be an obvious choice.

Strength:

Price, Cabinet Design, Sound.

Weakness:

50 lbs heavier than competitors, terrible reliability.

Short and sweet:

The first one (yes...first one) was delivered and a day later the picture blew. The second one was delivered and the next day the red gun blew. Two faulty toshiba's in a row leaves a bad taste in my mouth for this tv.

I bought it because of the low price and the reviews that I read on this webpage. I'm either unlucky or the others reviewers of this product are lucky. I have since returned the toshiba, and after more research, went with a panasonic pt-51sx30. It was a showdown between this and a similar Hitachi model but when comparing pictures (yes I fooled around with the settings to get a proper comparison) the panasonic was more pleasing to my eye (and a little cheaper).

In summary, if you are planning to buy a projection tv. I wouldn't buy this one. In fact you shouldn't buy any entry level projection tv. Buy the mid models and go home secure in your mind that you aren't getting the worst parts, worst picture, and worst sound.

The picture is sharp with black blacks and vivid colors. The speakers have good bass sound. This TV has three sets of A/V inputs with s-video and one set component inputs.

Strength:

50" Toshiba TV for under 1K

Weakness:

So far, none found

Bought one at a store for less than $1K, and it wasn't a refurb or open box. Really good image quality, whether I'm playing DVD (Toshiba 2109) or cable broadcast. In my side-to-side comparisons, Toshiba rear-projection TVs have shown to be better TVs than Sony. Just a personal opinion.

Strength:

Not overly large, nicely proportioned for a 50” RPTV. 3 sets of inputs, PLUS component. Remote is not great, but not bad. Great price point. Great entry level set for first time RPTV purchasers.

Weakness:

Not HD-Ready, not 16:9. But, you do get what you pay for.

Wanted to take the plunge in a RPTV, so I started shopping. Toshiba has a good reputation, and it shows even in its low-end sets.

Looked at the Sony, RCA and the Toshiba RPTVs that were on Display in the Annapolis Best Buy. RCA was first to be eliminated due to picture quality when compared to the Tosh and the Sony. Sony was eliminated next because I could not see enough of a difference to warrant spending $300 more for the Sony.

Looked at the 50”, 55”, and the 61” Toshiba 4:3 sets available. When the 50” and the 55” were side-by-side, the 50” had the better picture. The 61” was eliminated because I felt that it would totally dominate the room, where the 50” was a better fit.

The build quality of the unit is top notch. Clear, crisp picture, and OK sound. Can be a bit “boomy” when the SBBS is engaged. Good on-screen menu, but it took a little bit to learn how to navigate. Remote angle is a bit narrow; sometimes you need to point the remote right at the set. Learning curve issues. When surfing using the built in tuner, it seem to take a little longer to lock onto the channel than our old direct view set, and noticeable slower when compared to changing channels on our RCA 3rd generation sat receiver.

Unit sits on casters, which allows easy moving while doing equipment hookups. 3 sets of inputs (s-video, composite video, and audio inputs) with 2 sets on the back of the set, with one set of inputs mounted on the front of the set behind a flip down cover. The set also has component inputs on the rear of the set for a DVD player. The set also has an input to use the built in set speakers as a center channel for a DTS or DD 5.1 setup.

As fat as the convergence drift, I have only had to the 9-point convergence once in the 7 weeks I have owned the set. I have ordered the Service Manual for the set, and it documents on how to do the 64-point convergence. I am debating on doing this myself, or just having it done when I get the set ISF calibrated.

Bottom line is that the set is a great entry-level set to build a home theater up around. The TZ50V61 was a 2000 model year set, which has now been replaced by the TZ50A61 I believe… If you can still find this set, go ahead a grab it.

Strength:

Good Picture, Component Video Input as well as S-video

Weakness:

NONE YET

This is overall a good buy for a entry level projection bigscreen. I have had no problems with my tv. Sometimes it is better to spend alittle more money locally (and get better face to face customer service) instead of on the internet, but this is the consumers choice. To sum up this Toshiba Projection tv is : gerat picture, alot of features, and good shoud from front speakers. Also don't expect a 1,500.00 tv to perform like a Sony projection that cost 2,999.00++++++.
