Wow lucky me. My daughter won our Toshiba TN55X81 in a church raffle. In 5 years we have had no trouble. Hook up was challenging with Surround Sound, Cable, DVD Player, and VCR but succesful. I am getting ready to go digital, finally, with a cable set top converter. I was waiting to purchase a set top converter when a young salesperson at my nearby appliance store informed me that I could get the same quality picture from our cable company. I can hardly wait to see a digital picture. I would reccomend this set to anyone. I havent had a bit of trouble with it. DVD Picture is gorgeous. In our small 10x 12 living room This size set just blows you away.

HDTV, Progresive scan, video quaility, audio quality ect. ect.

Weakness:

nothing so far

This RPTV is probably the best on the market right now overall. I think it has a much better picture than the sony RPTVs which are alot more money. I dont understand how people can put down this TV they probably dont have it properly calibrated. If you want a big screen go buy this one now its the best RPTV for the best price.

Price, Number of inputs, Picture quality

Weakness:

Too new! Repair shops don't even have manuals on these yet. Toshiba seems to have uninformed customer service reps when I called on a question. I also Emailed them and got a form letter reply.

I purchased several months ago from a local retailer. Seattle has a couple of overpriced audio/video retailers so I was surprised to find one that would match One Call and other online retailers at 2150.

The set has good picture and actually has great sound out of the internal speakers (I have a 6 speaker Dolby Digital set up to go with it). I had no trouble setting up all the wires/cables. The problems with the picture I have noticed have to do with the lousey signal from some channels and poor/old films that broadcast that way. Watching the local news from the big networks produces a crystal clear picture with excellent color.

I plan on adding a Toshiba 3109 DVD player soon and from what I have seen so far on Demos there are no artifacts or other problems that would indicate poor set. I compared this to the Hitachi and Mitsubishi (similar sets in HDTV) and for the 1-2 thousand bucks saved, the small (very small) improvement in the Mitsubishi just wasn't worth the added price. I also was told RCA has the HDTV decoder box comming out in a few months priced at around 600 or so. It is suppose to be a universal box.

I definitly would recommend this TV if money was of any concern. I am only giveing the overall rating a 4 as some sets do have a better picture but the price difference is far from worth it. A 4 1/2 star would be more realistic.

One problem I encountered was when I inquired about the internal "tweaking" a tech could do I was told that Toshiba hasn't sent out manuals to the repair shops yet. I talked to several repair places and was told the same thing.

Crystal Clear picture from colorstream hd input, nice menu layout. Excellent price for HDTV ready set. Ample variety of inputs

I just recieved this set and am amazed with the quality from a sd-5109 through progressive component ins. The key to rear projection televisions is proper calibration. The owner of Next Big Thing (Mississauga, Ontario) was nice enough to burn in the set and calibrate it using the Avia test disc, from the first time I turned the set on I have been awestruck be the clarity of the set. If I turn the color cal. to the default factory settings, the set looks terrible, I can not stress the importance of proper calibration. I would recommend this set to everyone, and if you are demo'ing it at a store ask the salesperson if the set has been calibrated (not just color settings, but from within the service menu)before passing on this one.

Low Price HDTV Ready, Brandsmart sawgrass mills Florida, See Melvin $2,200. In Stock

Weakness:

Picture looks dull and blurred. DVD looked like a poor VHS tape. Tuner is Slow, Progressive Scan Makes Everything look like crap.

I got a Magnavox 9p5540c from Sears on a pricematch for $1598. It's a very nice 55" set for the money. I am sitting only 9 feet so I notice scanlines. I figured for $600 more lets go with HDTV Ready so Went down to the store to demo the unit. They play A Bugs Life on all there TVs All the sets look clear with that as a source. So I got them to hook a DVD Toshiba to the set and pop in the matrix. It looked like a bad VHS tape or ghosted cable picture. The Progressive Scan Turns Sharp pictures into SOFT and colorless crap. The build quility is also poor as i notices almost all the toshiba tv's had lose screens. I realy wanted this tv from the reviews I read but found it to be a real disapointment.

Great pictures w/ great sources

Weakness:

Line doubling of mediocre source makes it even worse

After doing extensive tweakings to my Toshiba, I've indicated the strengths and weaknesses as above. I wish I have to ability to turn on/off the internal line double - and also have the ability to squeeze 16x9 source for anamorphic DVDs. I did have a chance to watch HDTV source on this model at a dealer - EXCELLENT (almost as 3D as one can get). The only other HDTV with more 3D than this Toshiba was the Sony 34" direct view for $6499!

This is a spectacular RPTV. The picture quality is vivd, clear and film like. The audio is clear and dramatic.
Even regular NTSC broadcast via cable were delivered and displayed accuratley.
Play a DVD into the units HD Componet inputs and kick back for a movie like
experience. I kept pinching myself.
With a price tag of only $2150, this is by FAR the best price performing HD ready set on the market.

My TN55X81 was delivered on Friday. I have watched a half dozen DVD's on it and have found the picture to be stunning. I don't know how many times I've turned to the person next to me and commented how it looks like watching film in a theater. It's my first RPTV, so my experience is based on comparing it to my 15-year-old 27" Trinitron (which was adjusted with VE and Avia, BTW).
I bought it based on hearing about it and seeing the 50" at a local dealer about 3 weeks ago. At that time, it was remarkably better looking than the sets on either side (a Mitsu and a Sony), primarily because of the line doubler. Fact of the matter is, when you sit 10' from a 55" NTSC screen, no lines is (are?) better than lines.

I had seen several line doubled sets in the stores on Panasonic, Toshiba, and Sony sets. They were almost always at their worst, being fed noisy signals and no adjustments from factory settings. In particular, the Sony DRC always seemed to look like "percolating" water to my eyes, and seemed annoying after a short period. Other doublers seemed to create occasional "blotches" in solid colors.

Since there will probably be several more years of NTSC TV watched in my house, the aspect ratio (4:3) and (tolerable) performance with plain old TV was of some concern. In this regard, the new Toshiba was remarkably good. The doubler makes the picture slightly "soft", but rerely seems to produce artifacts in the background. Sometimes when there's a lot of motion, you will see small fleeting "patches" of what may be motion artifacts, but never the everpresent background that I always seemed to see with (uncalibrated) DRC and others. I am certainly no expert on line doublers, however. I just know what I see.

To see this set at its best however, you've got to try a DVD through the component inputs. I use a Pioneer AV-414 player and though I can't (I don't think) do anamorphic, the line doubler makes up somewhat for that. I did calibrate the set using Avia through the component inputs.

The 2 factors that make it look like film to me are the smoothness (no scan lines), and the saturation of the colors. The red on the hood of Austin Powers' car near the start of the film is something I thought you only saw in film. Yellows are also stunning. On material that was created artifically, (i.e., Antz, Bug's Life) it's stunning. The only thing that compares is actual HDTV. I would call the effect "pseudo-HD" (SDTV?).

There were minor convergence problems, but I was able to clean those up from the service menu convergence mode grid. The is no sign of warpage or separation on my shield frame - all seems tight and straight. The shield IS reflective - make no mistake. However, it's a dark reflection. Take that for what it's worth. Along those lines, 3 minutes after the set was first turned on, my 3-year-old niece walked up and laid her hands flat on the screen, obviously excited by the big picture. So reflection or not, that's why we have those things.

The thing that makes this impressive is the price point. It was $2800 and I don't think anyone else comes close for that price.
