Strength:

The size is awesome, the brightness and contrast are excellent. 100Hz reduces the amount of flicker quite considerably. Wide viewing angle. 4:3 to 16:9 conversion for normal TV is not as squashed as some other TV's I've seen. Price is very low for such a large screen.

Weakness:

Reflective screen can get a bit annoying. There's only 1 RGB input on AV1 (AV2/AV3 are non RGB) Sound quality is a bit muffled if it's on its own. Grey bars down the side of 4:3 pictures are slightly distracting/take getting used to.

Superb price/quality value. This is probably the biggest screen for the amount of cash. Coupled with a decent DTS capable DVD and Surround Amp this TV comes into its own

Strength:

Great picture, light, Fast teletext, Naviguide

Weakness:

No PIP, no room light sensor, no high input for center channel

The 52RW65ES is technically identical to 53RW64E. Only change is the "Scenium" product line coloring (Silver). The picture above is of the 52RW64E.

I got this at a bargain due to a special offer. They threw in Thomson's top-of-line VCR at no extra charge!

This is my first big screen TV and i love it. When guest come to visit, the most frequent response is hysterical laughter in disbelief of the size of this thing. Then they ask to see something, then they're hooked :-)

Setup was a breeze. The set basically did everything itself. After fiddling a bit with convergence setup and contrast settings the picture was close to perfect. Best results of course by using DVD.

After a month of delight with this set, I only have a few issues mentioned under weaknesses. I would also like som discrete remote inputs such as AV select directly instead of one button for all AV channels. More detailed convergence setup. As for teletext - it could be better implemented by adding settings for fixed opening page e.g. program page instead of page 100.
The naviguide is a program guide that works with about half of my channels. It is somewhat slow however, and not so usefull.

Overall though this set is great value.

Strength:

The Thomson Scenium 44RW65ES rear projection television offers superb 44-inch widescreen images. It boasts superb colours, intense contrast levels, great fluidity of motion and stable images - without flicker. It has a wide viewing angle, and can handle a variety of picture formats, without visible loss of detail. As well as amazing picture quality, it also has incredible sound, thanks to a Virtual Dolby decoder, and more than enough connections for home theatre applications. All this is packed into a very stylish design.

Weakness:

Nothing yet

The RP Scenium is a rear projection extra-large television that is literally like having a movie theater in your house. The big screen (133 centimeters) and the big sound provide the same kind of intensity that, until now, you could only experience in the cinema. Your senses and your emotions will be completely captivated and you can finally reproduce that "lose yourself in the story" experience in your own living room. The RP Scenium must be seen to be believed: the picture is perfectly stable, with greater detail and better contrast than any other product in its range. You will also benefit from the full effect of Dolby ProLogic sound, as the set is equipped with 4 subwoofers, a bass reflex and surround speakers. There are, as well, a number of user-friendly features that it make it almost better than the movies: you can zoom in on a shot, you can find out what is being broadcast on other channels with the Picture in Picture function, and you can see what program is on next with the Program Info function.

Strength:

High luminosity and contrast, big size, good quality for retroprojector, RGB input.

Weakness:

screen reflects a lot the light, remote, do not have RGB individual inputs (only euroconector).

Thank to Keld from Denmark to advise me to buy this big TV.

I think there is no product in the market with this relation quality/price/size, maybe for a little bit more money you can buy some Hitachi models.

The first days that I had it, I called technical service for adjust convergence, then I saw technical setup ("prog- + vol- + power" in front panel). From then, I have worked a bit to adjust very fine convergency and the image have becomed great. With this TV, a finest setup of convergency is the key to have the better image possible.

Remote and menus in the screen are a little hard to hand, but the more weaknesses for this TV is the reflects of the screen. In order to watch the TV with a satisfied image you have to be almost darkness in your room or with a little light. 5 zooms are sufficients for all formats and teletext is quite quick.

Finally I can recommend you this TV if you want a compromise between normal TV and front projector with spend a reasonable amount of money. The high level 36" Sony costs about 4000$ and it is tiny compared with the 52" Thomson. You will enjoy much more with a big 52" screen than with a 36" screen and a better quality of picture, when you see a movie, size is the only thing that will make you believe you are in your little private theater.

Strength:

Price. Only US$2120 in Singapore but the model I bought was 52RW76EW. It has recently been replaced by another grey-coloured set.
Bright enough to watch in a moderately lit room.

Weakness:

No component video input.

Great picture.

Not too sure about the model you guys have but mine has a swappable non-reflective screen behind the reflective one.

Does anyone know how to get into the service menu? Saw someone at the store getting into it by pressing a combination of buttons in the front of the set where the VOL, PROG, INSTALL buttons are.

Asked him, but he refused to tell me.

Anyone?

4 stars for its lack of component video input.

Strength:

Size man!
Clear picture, Viewing angle, fast TeleText, the ability to move the picture up and down if it's in Cinemascope, so you can get rid of those damned subtitles.

Weakness:

It's heavy and I live on the second floor. :-)

This is just great. I love It. Should have bought it a long time ago! Combine with a great surround-system and you're on a roll.
Sometimes when the picture is very dark, a couple of faint vertical lines can be seen near the edge of the screen. But they are hardly noticable.
Ohh yeah, I would have liked the vertical bars left and right of the picture if it's 4:3(or Pan & Scan) to be black instead of grey.

Strength:

Excellent lightning ability, as crystal clear as can be expected from 52". Lots of connections on the back, lots of space for a center speaker on top. OK sound, nice text-tv features, RGB compatible and.... THE RIGHT SIZE !!

Weakness:

Very sensitive for light in the room. Switching between picture formats not always perfect

The size of the picture is truely breathtaking and combined with a lot of power from the projektors, the picture is nothing but excellent. Is is very easy to operate although the remote could be better. A major advantage is the possibility to switch between 100 Hz and 50 Hz. The sound is OK, but not good enough to justify the graphic equalizer. The sub in the console is nothing worth.
Overall this TV brings a tremendous experience for the home cinema and I recommend it without hesitation.

The 52RW76EW is the top-of-the-line "Scenium" RPTV coloring (Silver).

The Thomson silver is deservedly a legendary unit If you're looking for a great value in a 52" TV, look no further. Thomson really pulled out all the stops when they built this set. Picture quality is excellent, dolby pro logic surround sound system is awesome. This RPTV will help you to really appreciate a great anamorphic, high quality image. And I don't believe DVDs can look better than I see them . Operation is easy and the zoom feature is terrific.

This is my first big screen TV and I love it and I must say it was an excellent purchase. I looked at Sony, Toshiba, Hitachi and Panasonici... The Scenium had excellent image quality at a very reasonable price.

I went to an exhibition to look into getting a RPTV after reading many reviews here. The choice was not so clear, either a Sony, Panasonic or Toshiba… Suddenly I had my eyes set on a Thomson silver colour wide RPTV playing right near to a Sony . So different from the rest RPTV, so beautiful, sleek and cool. They were playing the usual A Bug's Life and I could tell that the Thomson scenium had far better color quality. My heart was simply going ga-ga over this TV. But the wife was quick to notice this and she loved it too. The signs were clear…BUY THIS TV…and we did . This is my first big screen TV and I love it and I must say it was an excellent purchase. I am reviewing all my DVD movies again because watching it on this set almost makes it a whole new movie and experience. You'll see things you never had the chance to see on any smaller sets. Beware though, you will help sleepless nights.

It does cost slightly more than Sony or Panasonic, but I feel the extra dollars are worth it. It looks even better than the direct view tv I have in the bedroom. You will be blown away by the clarity of the picture. Frankly, I don't see how HDTV can be any better. I am completely satisfied.

I always wanted a big screen, and after extensive research I got lucky and bought the Thomson silver. I am very happy I did. This is an excellent television.

This site has been helpful in me getting the the best RPTV . Don't waste your precious $$ on HDTV, Get the Silver one, you wont regret it.

Definitely a 5+ for performance and value. See and listen to believe
