I regret that I will have to return the iPod model MA147LL that I purchased, due to a serious software bug and/or design flaw. When playing tracks that are meant to flow continuously from one into the next the iPod interrupts the sound and blanks out for a moment between tracks. It does this EVEN WHEN RIPPED TO .WAV files which do NOT have this problem with other manufacturer's players. HOW could such a serious design issue pass quality control and get out undetected and or unfixed from Apple? SHAME on them, I expected better.

Battery Life, No FM, No Cradle Included, No WMA support

Don't pick the black version, pick the white one. See below why I don't recommend the black version. The catch is you have to sign up to an offer, but you can either find a free offer or find something that you were going to get anyway. I got a magazine subscription for my wife for xmas, which I was looking for anyway. There are lots of different things to chose from. Not a bad deal for the 60GB Video iPod. The thing that I don't like about the iPod I picked was the Black version of the 60GB one. It seems to be very smudge and finger print prone. I find myself constantly wiping it down. Also, the battery life could be longer for the amount of memory it has. Finally, I would think for the price that Apple is selling this at, they could have at least included a docking station. You have to buy that seperately, you just get a USB cable, which works, but would like to just dock and go. In the gym, they play the sound through the TV by FM Modulation. Since there is no FM Tuner, I can't really use this to listen like my old iRiver MP3 player. Finally, a lot of music is in the .WMA format and no support. But I guess I can't complain too much since it was free.

Doubts about battery reliability in the long term - it doesn't meet the 20 hours life quoted (more like 12).

Bought these on a recent visit to the US - already had the previous generation iPod, but the battery was on the way out. The Video iPod is smaller, chunkier (feels better in the hand) and has a vastly better screen - I've got most of my main photo albums and 250+ CDs on it and it's not yet half full (30 of 60GB). The sound is definitely better than the 3rd generation - clearer and a stronger and better-articulated bass. It also goes louder than my old one (European iPods are volume-limited to protect your hearing). Am using it with my new Grado SR80s and there's not more one could ask for (after, that is, you've replaced the scratchy SR80 earpads with the comfy SR60 ones). I suspect quite a bit depends on your compression setting - I'm using AAC at 256kbs and even over my main system (Arcam/B&W P6) it sounds terrific. But a lower bit-rate would no doubt drag the sound down.

Cost, got 60 gigs for $400, would like to see it for less.

I have owned 3 different products including the IRiver 20 gig, etc. I was amazed at the difference in the sound quality, big improvement. Small, a bit heavier than I expected at 5.5 oz. Pretty simple to use. The trick is to add your music to thew Itunes software and unsync, then resync. The resyncing will copy your music to the player. Does play MP3 music. Waiting to try the video, but with the new company offering shows for free sometime in the future this will make use of that.
