Bottom Line:
I just purchased this unit to be the replacement for my old Sony STR-D315. I didn't need a home theater system for the service needed, just a good stereo for the bedroom. I recently upgraded to a flat panel TV, a Sony Bravia 32". The Sony D315 amp was primarily used for the TV.
Much to my surprise, the old D315 integrated with the new TV very well, with one (amp remote) button turning both TV and amp on/off. Good things don't last long, and the amp developed trouble with the right channel. So off to the audio repair shop it went. They tried their best, but the problem returned.
When looking for a new Sony, there's not much choice when it comes to just stereos. And boy, this STR-DH100 is basic as basic gets. My old D315 was better suited for my needs. With it I had a monitor switch, and the ability to pass a 10 band EQ through when I wanted. Also the old Sony had a switched 110V outlet on the back, that the EQ drew its power from. Ok, so I can live without an EQ, and this new Sony has neither.
Another drawback, the remote for the new DH100. It will turn on the TV, but two hands are required to do so. One hand pressing the TV button (bottom left), and the other pressing the A / V power button, that is next to the amp power button on the top right. I will say the remote does duty as another remote for the TV, but there's that darn two hand operation. Sony really screwed up a good thing with the remote's features... KISS.
The other operations of the amp are as expected. Simple format, and ease with the functions. And it sounds great, but I really don't crank'er'up in the bedroom.
I've decided I can live with these flaws for the money spent, it's new and trouble free. If I had to do it over again... I'd go find an older Sony amp like my D315 and spend the money to have it looked over. With this STR-D100, don't expect much but a fair stereo.
