Strength:

This is one special amplifier. As a studio sound engineer, I want detail AND musicality at home. And oh boy, does it deliver. This is the fastest amplifier I've ever owned; transients really hit you. From zero to sixty and back in no time at all. It never loses control. But it will never be fatiguing, unless your speakers tend to be. My Synthese Floating Two speakers are a perfect match. I've owned it for about twelve years now, and will probably cry if it ever dies on me. If you own one and think it lacks oomph: recap it. You won't regret it. The Project Ten, to me, is better than the Two-Twelve combo. The latter is a tad softer, slower, more laid back (but still excellent).

Weakness:

The motorized volume knob takes huuuge steps when pressing a volume knob on the remote control for a millisecond.

I bought the Sphinx Project Ten in July 2005 and I can only say one thing : this amp is of utmost quality. I bought the Project Ten to replace a Musical Fidelity X A-100R, which rendered excellent services, but which became a little old. I listen almost exclusively to classical music. What the Project Ten adds is, first of all, that the human voices really seem to be genuine voices. The emotion that is conveyed is really perceptible. The amp performs an excellent restitution of all sounds, whether bass, medium or treble; one could not discern any flaw. The accuracy of each sound is impressive : if a sound is two notes, the amp will deliver exactly these two notes, and nothing else. All this delivers a very natural impression of effortless musicality. Finally, the musical image is extremely precise : in a orchestra, you can locate each instrument. My only comment would be that the remote unit may look cheap…, but this is not important.

I did not change the other components of my system so that brought I got a significant improvement with only the inclusion of the Project Ten. The amp perfectly matches the Mission 783 as loudspeakers (see hereunder for full list of components).

In conclusion, I can strongly recommend this device to classical musical listeners. Only make sure that the other components of your system are sufficiently good to match the Project Ten.

I was up to an upgrade of my old Marantz SE amplifier and was able to jump in to high-end for a give away price. The Sphinx project Ten used to sell for around $1750. Used to because unfortunately Sphinx has gone bankrupt. This integrated amp differs a bit from the Sphinx pre- and power amp combination in that it sounds a bit less warm, is open and detailed. In comparrison with Marantz the midband stands out more. The one thing that attracted me to the Sphinx was the seemingly effortless manner in which it reproduces the music, everything under control(In the shop I have listened to this amp preform on different speaker types including electrostatics). In this it is better than the Myth5. Furthermore it is a finely crafted piece of equipment using top quality components like Siltech wiring and WBT connectors.
