Strength:

Transparent, fast, characterless.

Weakness:

The existance of more expensive Goldmund equipment which justify the price differance nevertheless.

These products are being used with a Goldmund SRP2 pre, please check the equivalent review but for the time being one must be thankfull that little products like these do exist among us. The previous SRMs had a reputation build around them but these will become legends ! Many consider those better than the Mimesis28M butI would not go that far although I must admit that the differences need accute hearing and a fine system. In broad terms they use the same layout and componentry bar the values of the components themselves. Where they differ significantly is their build which the latter use the famous " thermal & mechanical grounding" by Goldmund. Relevant to this review are the extended yet smooth response, the timing and colour of music and the lack of artificiality in the sound. They remain calm and controlled even under great pressure and rely on the fact of reproducing recorded music taking themselves as entities out of the system. One should be wise to use them with ancileries and paraphernalia of extreme quality and never switch them off! They are monoblock amplifiers and they remain so without any side effects to the musical signal. The cost is that some people, not being able to identify character, miss their greatness and further, an oportunity to end their never ending quest towards musical fidelity nirvana. Good luck!

Strength:

fast and detailed yet natural sounding.
Very refined performers.

Weakness:

Very sensitive to cable matching, preamp choices.
Doesnt look $5k.
Similar priced Mimesis 28 is cosmetically better looking

My experience with Goldmunds previosly were the Mimesis
8.5 and 6.2 with the 7.5pre back in 95/96.I found them fast and detailed but could sound etched and a bit soulless in the wrong set up.I chose Jeff Roland Model 8 over them.

Recently, demoed the SRM2 monoblocks and Mimesis 28 at Precision A/V.

The SRM2 was the more natural sounding of the two with a sweeter top end. The 28 sounded slightly brighter with a hint of hardness in the highs. Both these amps were not as "bloomy" as conventional tube designs but possessed a natural presentation which was a tinge on the warmer side of neutral. The 28 was fuller in the midbass and deep bass(less controlled)than the SRM2. Pace and timing of both were exemplary, providing a very enjoyable swing to most music genres.

The Pass labs are the most full sounding SS amp I have heard and in my opinion way too colored sounding .Vocals sounded very good and full sounding. Initial Impressions were of a languid and tubey sound but extended listening proved boring as the Pass seemed to slow down rock and pop music in favour of presenting vocals and Jazz.

My Jeff Rolands were certainly warmer and fuller than both Goldmunds but could not match the refinement the SRm2's possessed. Yet, Goldmunds had a faster more explosive presentation that belied its minature size.

According to the owner, these 200w Goldmunds are dual transformed and DC coupled in each monoblok and using a very high speed Job circuit that enabled efficient generation of power.

The Goldmunds SRM2 were very preamp sensitive, sounding amazingly open and transparent with the mimesis 27 preamp and fuller and warmer with the matching SRP2 preamp.

The SRP2 perhaps added a little bit of tonal coloration
and on the minus side veiled a bit of resolution and soundstaging ability .Cable matching is going to be very crucial too because of its transparent nature.

Listening to these small amps has made me realise that there was still quite some way to go in SS amp design. Goldmund has somehow reached this hallowed ground combining the delicacy and refinement and naturalness of tubes with the speed ,silence and control of solid state.

Thoroughly enjoyable.

Strength:

tonally coherent without any solid state glare,
exceptional at portraying texture. FAST

Weakness:

size?

Bought these to replace my 332.
Id already was impressed with the original srm's in 99/2000 but had just bought the 332.
First thing I noticed was the finesse in the top end , lack of SS glare and grain and the speed and transient attack. My shoon mook bella voce was already on the warmish side but lacked attack. The srm2 's brought out the timbral accuracy superior imaging that the 332 and BAT amps couldnt.
The Similar goldmund 28 plus had a more fleshed out lower bass line but overall, the srm2's were still a little tighter sounding which suited the bellas well.

This is one of the best SS amps Ive ever heard. A
real giant killer.

Strength:

powerful yet subtle in nuances.
Information retrieval is first rate
and absolutely no solid state glare.

Weakness:

Nobody believes uts a powerhouse

This amp is so amazing. I pride myself in making a judicious selection of components after playing around with stero systems for 20 odd years.

I can tell you that Chord make fine amps, my decision to
try out the 1200E was dictated by having owned the 600 power and CPA 2200 pre.

While demoing the bigger Chords , theses Goldmund monobloks was dropped in by Lars
, one of my business contacts with a wry smile.
His words were "just listen, Ill collect them back in a week "

Same advice to everyone"just listen" :)

Wonderful sounding amplifier. Compared with the Plinius SA100 Mk III, it has sweeter and more refined highs. Control in the bass is good but not as extended as the Plinius. One problem with the physical design is the speaker binding posts are to close to each other. No over sized spades for this fellow, or you might find yourself with a blown amp. 4 stars, with 5 being the very best money can buy.

Strength:

best buy for money, these are monoblocks (250W) for $ 4700
which is a bargain

Weakness:

Goldmund you must be kidding......this is it boys and gals

Most neutral amps I heard recently ,currently useing them with Sonus Faber Amati and Siltech LS-180 cabels I belive
that I'm in sonic heaven at this time...and I have tryed many other amps..Spectral and Ayre and Goldmunds own Mimesis 28 and the little SRM2 are in my point of you way better than 28....they are truly a best buy in Goldmund line....

If you have a chance please listen to them even if you want to spend more money you may find out that there is no need.
ENJOY IT.....TEN STAR RATING

A very natural sounding amp with excellent pace and attack.
Open sounding at frquency extremes, the srm2's presentation of detail is neither etched or veiled.
They drive difficult loads with ease. Cable choices are very important as they are so transparent.Goldmund doesnt recommend the use of any network cables because of the high bandwith design. We have used ultra high bandwith Highwire cables as well as Goldmund owns lineal cables with very good results.

Strength:

read below... Talk abt David slaying Goliath

Weakness:

looks like a car amp.
spkr terminals are pretty cramped.

When I went to the dealer with my plans to trade up
my aging 8.2, I had in mind the mimesis 28.4 monos with the new JOB circuitry. He didnt have any in stock and offered to let me try the new 250W monoblocks SRM2 which was around $5k.

When he carried them in, My first reaction was one of disbelief then laughter.
These are toys compared to my 8.2. Try imagining A4 sized paper reams....they are heavy though, weighing in around 33pounds each. Anyway, he said to me very seriously that I should listen with an open mind.

i have had them home twice for 2 weeks, and honestly I am flabbergasted. They sound incredibly open and fast with a slight foward character that fills up the midrange. Yet they deliever the sonic goods with authority and weight that belies there size.im sure that the Krells go deeper but they dont have that tubelike tonality that only the newer goldmunds seem to be able to produce.

i have yet to find anything that trips them up.
My speakers , Von schweikert VR4;s now flat out
dissapear with no signs of strain.

I am at two minds whether to keep them.partially because of my ego- Does size matter:)????
My life loves them, she now says I should buy spkrs of that size.
