Bottom Line:
I have used this receiver for several years now and can atest to the fact that aside from not having the latest HDMI capabilities, it does just about everything else right as far as home surround sound duties. It has true robust and clean power output, more than enought analog and digital inputs, even has a phono input. Remote is easy and intuitive to use, and programmable. The number of surround modes is impressive, and I feel Yamaha does them better than anyone. Great THX Select, Dolby Digital EX, DTS EX, Dolby Pro Logic IIx, etc. I have bought and sold in the retail business Yamaha, Onkyo, Pioneer, Sony, JVC, Integra, Denon, Nakamichi, Technics, Elite, etc., and the Yamaha receivers always rank at or near the top of their respective catagories. The only line I feel bests the Yamaha in sound quality, by a narrow margin, is the Nakamichi receivers. However, they do not have the capabilities of the Yamaha in connections, surround options and system control. Bought mine for $150.00 or so used, can't go wrong if this unit does all you need.
