Strength:

REMOTE NEAT. LOOKS ARE GOOD, OVERALL SOUND PRETTY GOOD

Weakness:

OVERHEATING, REMOTE SLUGGISH, UNUSUAL BREAKS

vr 2080. i have owned my unit of junk for about 4 years. the remote is alright but slow and the cursor is non sense. the sound output is actually good across the range, i have 2 SM225 infinitys' with 15's in them and the low bass slams hard. looks are great i bought the matching cd player, so they look good together but their has been problems. the thing has been in the repair shop 3 times during warranty and out of warranty. the unit is immaculate, i even have the original box , i baby the damn thing but it gets hot, the fan hardly ever comes on. i use an external fan to get temp to my taste. first problem i had was it was buzzing out of both speakers intermittently and the fan quit, the secong time it produced no sound, and the third it was buzzing again, after i got back from Kenwood's "preffered repair shops" the link that allows the cd player to actuate the input automatically quit working, i think my next set of components will probably be from krell or carver, this would make for a good bedroom radio. i will probably not buy any kenwood products in the near future for i have also had other rediculous problems with them. did i mention the cd player stopped playing out of know where and it recently lost all memory of the cd titles, time to upgrade just waiting for the $$$$.

This reciever although physically not very good has awesome DTS decoding, it literally slaps Dolby digital across the room. I would not recomend buying one becuse i already had to get mine fixed and i should proabably renew my warranty while i'm thinking about it, well anyway if you want good DTS this reciever was the best at the time i bought it in 1998! but today about everthing with DTS decoding in it's class beats it.

Strength:

A/B Channel with seperate amps, dependability, many adjustments to customize to listening preference

Weakness:

remote is a pain, could use more power, but was plenty enough for me

This reciever was well worth the money. I bought it over 2 years ago and I haven''t had a problem yet. The 2 room feature is great! Most recievers don''t have a amp for the second room. With me being a college student, we abused this reciever. It was never turned off and it was used every day, all day long. We would have parties and use both room channels at the same time, filling the room with sound from 4 speaker, all producing stereo at HIGH volume and it never overheaded!!! AMAZING!! The remote is clumsy, I agree, but I still like it. With this remote, I can very easily customize the audio settings of the reciever. DD and DTS are great through this reciever. Excellent sound quality. I never had a very good opinion about kenwood and was skeptical about buying this reciever, but for the price I couldn''t pass it up. I am now a believer in kenwood once again.

Strength:

Dolby Digital, DTS, Overall slick-looks

Weakness:

Front panel has limited functionality. Remote is required for most of all functions.

Placed a bid on onsale.com as a refurbished unit. Got the receiver and it worked for about 5 minutes before the sound output became muffled. While it was working, the unit sounded great! But I consider this to be defective out of box.

I tried to fiddle around with the receiver using a variety of speakers but still can't get it to work. I think the problem is because the refurbishing job was poor. The unit itself looked great, and sounded nice when it is working. Perhaps when this unit was new, this would have been a good buy. The remote control looks very impressive for the common person, however, it would probably take a programmer to understand completly on its functions. The shipped manual is not the greatest, but Kenwood's web site (www.kenwoodusa.com) has much better supplements for the manual.

I have now returned the unit and starting to shy away from refurbished audio reciever products. It is really a luck of draw, if you are willing to gamble, you may win. I am looking at a new Sony STR-DB line instead now...

For this reciever, if you buy it new, I would give it a 4 star and 3 overall. For my refurbished experience, I give it a 2 star (for when it worked) and 1 overall.

This Reciever has great sound and was bought really cheap online. I ended up paying about $250 for it.

I can only think of two weaknesses. The first is it has no s-video capabilities. The second has to do with the remote. Althought the remote is good for controling audio components and impressing your friends, it does not have the audio/video ease that I would like from an audio/video reciever. It is really hard to change channels and do some other functions. It will not replace all your other remotes.

Weakness:

remote controls almost everything..no controls on unit but a few

well i like it...dolby digital and dts sound great..stereo mode for music kind of muffled..if you can get this for 300.00 or less snag it ..remote is cool once you get the hang of it..not a remote for everyday use though...unit will not take any jvc codes either ...or should i say jvc wont give there codes out...all in all i like it.. you have questions e-me maybe i can help....this unit is better for home theater rather than music.. keep this in mind..

Strength:

0, none, naught, nil zip, zilch

Weakness:

Top to bottom, from the weak ass remote(which was the best part of it), to the crappy IC-based amplifiers

When I bought this stereo, it was the phattest, balls to the wall, bombest receiver I'd ever owned. Within 2 weeks, I returned my first one, and 6 months later it was crap again. I haven't even looked at it in almost a year because of the hassle to get it repaired.

It smoked, fried, then turned over--feet in the air at a modest sound level. I'm disapointed to say the least.

Strength:

Ditto the great sound.

Weakness:

Worked great until we lost sound about a month ago. 4 weeks later, we're still waiting on the replacement parts from Kenwood. I just called today, looks like we'll have to wait at least another week for the part to come in. Ditch the remote and buy a replacement.

Great value (got mine off of onsale's auction site), but reliability is obviously an issue. 5 stars when you take into account value and sound, but the reliability issue brings this down to a 3.
