Strength:

Encodings, dual-zone/dual-source, per-source settings, RF remote, IR blaster

Weakness:

For the price, few. On a comparable Onkyo you would probably trade one of the JVC features for an auto-setup mic, but initial setup is pretty simple on the JVC and everyone tweaks the settings later anyway :-)

High marks for value! Not only do you get Dolby Digital EX, DTS-ES, DTS Neo:6, and Pro Logic IIx, it comes with an RF remote and an IR re-transmitter, so you can control other components via RF, and the IR re-transmitter could save you the price of a Hot-Link Pro if you have trouble aiming your remote at some of your sensors. It's also dual-zone/dual-source. The second zone is amped, unless you have zone 1 in surround mode. But there are zone 2 pre-amp outputs as well as speaker outputs, so my old receiver is going to become the zone 2 amp. Plenty of power, and setup was fairly straightforward. My "upstairs" VCR is mono, but I've been impressed with what DPII has been able to do with even a mono recording from that VCR. My DVD seems to be "quieter" than the other components, but because the receiver keeps up with your settings per-source, I can have the DVD volume at 40 and it resets to 20 when I switch to the VCR.
