In 1990 I helped my little brother buy his first stereo and the RX-901 is the receiver he picked. Last year after my even older JVC receiver was dying I got on Clasifieds 2000 and found a used RX-901 in mint condition. I must say that I've never been happier. It has (GET THIS) 5 in-out loops: 2 for VCRs, 2 for Tape and 1 for DAT. You CANNOT find this many inputs on any typical receiver in today's market. It also has JVC's renowned SEA graphic equalizer which, unlike what they pass off today, is a real 7-band job with RECORDING capability. Now, if you know this unit you're saying 100 watts is fine, but only 15 for rear surround and NOTHING for the center channel? That's right but I've found it really easy to buy a couple of older JVC receivers for as little as $30 each since this unit allows you to separately amp the rear and center channels. And the flourescent display on the panel is especially noteworthy: it is most of the width of the unit and has LARGE and EASY-TO-READ characters. As my vision gets worse with age this is great for me. To wrap up, I find the newer JVC equipment on the market suffers from Yen drop -- the quality and features, heft, feel and fit and finish are just not what they used to be. JVC really had some great stuff from 1986-1992 and I'm finding all those models at e-Bay from surprisingly reasonable prices. JVC has the hands down best remote control system on the market (still does) and the DDRP feature for tape recording is absolutely flawless. Check out this or any other receiver of it's era and you will not be sorry.

This Reciever is crystal clear when it comes to sound, and has perfect surround sound modes. With large JVC speakers,
you don't even need a Sub! The bass and treble balance out very well, and when you turn it up loud, it sounds good, and not distorted. This reciever makes any speakers sound good (Except for Nuance. Then again nothing can help Nuance. Yuck!).

I would recommend this reciever to anyone! It is even better than any Pioneer Elite!
