All I can say on this Sherwood mk2 is that it is powerful, clean and warm.movies on DD and DTS really sound awesome.sound separation within the 5 speakers sound fast, convince and clean.not only that, but this receiver can slam hard too and can drive speakers like B&W .it's really a rare receiver whereby I enjoy all the action pack movies sound from motor bike sound to monster roar, it is lifelike, clean ,well trimmed and densely weighty.kept this receiver for 12years already and still in good condition.

Strength:

Price, 2 channel stereo audio. Best Remote I have owned.

Weakness:

Tuner not as strong as previous receiver. No six channel input.

The best I have found for Two channel stereo listening. If this is your primary listening objective with movies second.
Sounds even better with a sub woofer. I thought I could get away without one. I have front towers but with the sub in place the bass is even sweeter. You will not regret the addition, especially watching a video source. Tuner not that great listening to distant radio stations. Can't compare to my Yamaha R-9 (1985) model. Best remote I have touched. It will operate everthing in your system. And not just volume and channel controls on your devices. Soundcity
has a good price.

Awesome sound, great looks, DTS, 5.1,Dolby Digital,Outside S-input, great remote, everything but the kitchen sink.

Weakness:

There aren't any.....if I had one complaint it would be that it is not THX certified, other than that this reciever is FLAWLESS!!

Let me start of by saying that I have tested side by side all the above mentioned units along with other ones that I wont even bother listing, and did a very comprehensive test off all the recievers and let me tell you before you consider any of the other recievers....check out the Sherwood Newcastle R-945MKII. I have always heard of other "big-name" brand recievers like Harmon Kardon,Denon, Kenwood, Markata, SOny etc.. I was very convinced of purshasing one of those names, until a good friend of mine who owns a respectible and long time business of Home Audio and Car Audio equipment told me to try out the 'Newcastle" Line-up. Now of course I had to do some research of my own before I dumped a good chunk of my money on this reciever. I have looked in the history of Sherwood recievers and thier products, ie; price, quality, features, reliabilty etc. So after I had done my job of heavy research and compare and contrasts, I told my self that I had to hear the R-945MKII for myself. In one word .... ! WOW !
I was amazed at the sound and crisp clean volumes... I just was outstound at the recievers capability. I mean this reciever not only performs well, but looks like no other reciever out on the market today. I can tell this company did not take any short-cuts on thier craftsmanship, the product is well built and put together. In my final conclusion why spend over $ 1,500++ on any other reciever with practically the same features, quality, reliability, and power in some cases less when you can purchase this one for about half the cost??? I bought mine out the door for $825.There has been 3 other things in my life that I have spent good money on 1. Stripdancer/Lapdances 2. Guiness Pints, the other was this reciever. This unit will even make any cheap surround speaker sound like $1,000 a pair. Overall,I have had nothing but good things to say about it and even get compliments from my fellow collegues and engineer buddies.

Strength:

Everything you want, the way you want it

Weakness:

Not all bottons on the remote are marked for illumination

Never thought much of Sherwood in the past. The Newcastle 945 changed that. The objective for purchasing a home theater receiver is to get the whole package in a single unit on a reasonable budget. With this mindset you prepare to make compromises. Not needed with this receiver. For a small premium over an IC unit, the discrete output stage amps offer incredibly clear and effective power across the full frequency range. The volume knob is smooth with a fine gradient, input is handled with a neato rotary knob, most complex functions are made easy and inuitive (significant other(s) will love you more for it), and the face plate is slick. The remote is the most logical and practical I've used considering it does everything and makes you the boss. AC-3 is well administered, and the remote gives you full tinkering power for center/rear levels--even over the critical subwoofer level (useful in case of knocking neighbors).

the remote.takes a little time to get used to

To all new buyers reading this forum. You cannot go wrong buying this sherwood r945mk11.This receiver is the best value for money you can get.To buy another brand with all these features and power you would pay twice as much...Sure go out and buy a denon ,yamaha or whatever ,if you like to throw your money around.Save your money and get some speakers and sub all for the same price. Another hint....... dont listen to sales people in the stores. I have found that most of them knock every other brand that is not on their shelf.Check it out if you dont believe me.Their all so blinded by their product. That they do and would not give anything else a chance.

I had purchased one of these baby's and what a mistake. I have an Newxastle R925 without the DTS and blows this R945MKll receiver away. When I had hooked this receiver up it had very little power; it seemed like about 35 Watts. I called tech support and would not return any of my calls. This company has gone down the tubes and if you can get your hands on the R925, grab it. The sound is ten times better than the R945MKll. Stay away from this one.

Just to set a few things straight. This unit is not made in any asian country. It is made in Newcastle, England. This unit for the price is by far the best sounding home theater unit you can buy. I got mine for $899. The sound is very good for music and it is a great looking unit. I think for most people the power is fine, most people will never tell the diffrence between 85 and 100 watts. Sure I would like a few more inputs but for the next two or three years I wont really need them. I had the Marantz 780 and returned it when I tool this home and played the two side by side at home. For the money this thing is great!

EVERYBODY, PLEASE CALM DOWN! I can’t believe the controversy surrounding this piece of equipment. The Newcastle line has certainly got our attention doesn’t it?
Is it the best receiver around? No.

Is it a well-made receiver, certainly equal to its peers? Yes.

To bash this product is to bash a wide range of available equipment. As we all know, the Newcastle line is the ‘house brand’ of Inkel. Inkel manufactures parts, and even entire products, for a respectable percentage of other audio companies.

Where Inkel might have made a mistake is to buy the old Sherwood name. So much bad history surrounds it that people unfairly stereotype their equipment!

The 945 is a nice piece of equipment. It lakes gadgety features but has quality where it counts.
