The SR-580 is a good entry level product that only lacks s-video inputs and some power.

Strength:

clarity, clarity, clarity. smooth volume control.

Weakness:

no phono input.

this piece is sweet for the price. the signal to noise ratio is high and the receiver is quite transparent. lots of inputs! power is adequate, and i love the marantz name, which i equate with quality.

Strength:

DD 5.1, great stereo sound, excellent Pro Logic and Dolby Digital

Weakness:

No S-Video switching, only 2 digital inputs, Terrible DSP modes(but who needs them anyway)

I've had this receiver for 3 years now and I have been very impressed with the sound quality, that actually seemed to get better after about 2 weeks of use. I like the sub preamp out, so I can use my powered sub, and also get some low end from my front speaker pair. I'm moving this unit to my bedroom and replacing it with the Marantz SR5000, a very similar unit, only with s-video. If you can get the SR580 used or refurb. for less than $200, I think it's a steal.

I recently purchased the Marantz 580 from my local high-end store. I am very impressed to say the least. The quality of the Dolby sound in digital and surround is unmatchable by anything in this price range. Yamaha also has a comparable reciever for the same price as the Marantz but for clear and crisp sound the Marantz is a better choice. Needless to say, I was a little uneasy by the recent purchase of Marantz by Phillips but after examining the copper screws holding the cover to the chasis and then noticing the power supply, my worries were laid to rest. This thing is solidly built period. The sound reproduction in stereo is extremely crisp and clear to the point that it is comparable to some of the really nice Pioneer Elite stuff and Sony ES. It is definitely a step up from the typical Best Buy and Sears stuff without a huge increase in price from those places. Definitely a good listen for the price!!!

Strength:

Digital decoding; price

Weakness:

no s-video; power

I have been a very pleased owner of this product for over a year. I find the sound to be both clear and precise. I have only two complaints about this unit. The power is not equal on each channel (also not high enough). I also wish that it had s-video ports and possibly an extra digital input. For the money I must say it is worth every penny. I don't know of to many more receivers that will handle digital without costing more. I think it is a far greater value than 5 stars. But overall, it isn't perfect. I haven't replaced it though.

Strength:

Marantz quality, learning remote, looks good, inputs, and DD decoding.

Weakness:

Power--hate to say it but I wasn't satisfied. Remote layout.

Good quality and clairty. Not satisfied with the power and features at the price. No DTS, and just lacked punch. Had to really turn up the volume to get it cranking.
Remote laid out bad, but learns easy and everything. Why can't they but different sized buttons that are easy to identify instead of all tiny idenitical buttons???? We'll never know.

Decent receiver--it's a Marantz. Recommend if the price is right, but if you're paying over $250 for it, go grab the HK Avr-65--it can be had cheap on ebay and way outperforms this one, plus DTS!!!

i have owned the sr-580 for about 6 months now and think it's a great receiver for the price, sounds great and puts out plenty of power for my small to mid-sized room,
i just have one gripe though and that is that anytime that the digital input signal from my DVD player is dropped and then picked up again the speakers pop, sometimes loud, sometimes not too loud, this happens when skipping chapters, going through menus with music, RSDL layer changes, etc.

is anyone else having this problem and do you know how i can get it fixed? thanks for the help

Strength:

Great Sound, Nice Remote

Weakness:

No S-Video

I have had the marantz for about 6 or so months and haven't had any probles with it. I really love it and i think that it is a great value. No other reciver in its class has the sound and features it has. I just wished it had S-video and i think that the model that replaced this one has it :(
