Strength:

That it is not too heavy to throw it in the city dump where it was most likely created anyway.........

Weakness:

It's a shame that anyone would have to use currency other than Monopoly money to purchase this piece of human excrement..........

This is the worst receiver I ever heard: the quality of sound was non-existent, and the surround speakers sounded like they were being overloaded or "clipping" was occurring. I have never been a fan of JVC products and this is a classic example why. When the JVC equipment is BRAND NEW it looks chincy at best, and this particular receiver functions are too complicated for the small array of sound field choices to be considered "user friendly". Im very glad I only paid 40.00 for it because it isnt even a good garage unit AT ALL ! I did my best to get it to sound worthy of my affections rather than having to give it to some charitable organization as a gag gift.

I have had some real pieces of crap in my day of owning about 30 different receivers, but this one won the crappiest receiver competition hands down! If worst comes to worse, I 'll use it as my new paper weight and move aside my Sony STR 515 unit for the new reining champion of garbage! You may think this harsh, but really I'm in a really great mood today and thank GOD for that !!

Strength:

Powerful, economical, clean aesthetic.

Weakness:

Small buttons on remote, could use one additional video hookup and s-video switching.

I obviously got this receiver, only paying $50 for this and a matching 5 disc JVC cd changer. I think this receiver does a great job for what it is: an entry level receiver that has all of the functionality to step beyond a home theater in a box type system. It had plenty of power to drive all of my speakers, I enjoyed the ability to adjust the levels of my sub, as well as set the size (small or large) and delays of the other individual speakers. A lot of the other reviews speak of a lot of noise in the center channel, etc. I have experienced none of this. I have enjoyed well many movies on the system, and it does it's job, by making me forget about the system I'm using, and plunging into the plot and experience of movie watching. For a basic receiver, with hookups for a good amount of components, this is the ticket. If purchasing this, as it is no longer available in retail stores, a good value on ebay would be sub $150. Another bonus is the good sized, banana pluggable speaker terminals. I do think the remote has small buttons, but outside of that, this product has no weaknesses. It does what it is intended to do, with few frills, but well.

Weakness:

Poor quality sound, doesnt hold up to component system. Hassle to have repaired and after two years only who would want to.

Don't waste your time. Just spent time at Sears trying to get one repaired I only had for two years. I had my phillips receiver for almost 10. It came back unrepairable. Now fighting to get a replacement that is not a JVC

Strength:

Price, does what it suppose to do.

Weakness:

Remote

Great value. It's a great entry level unit. It does what I expected it to do. DD,DTS, etc.. The only drawback is the remote, buttons are small and how do they expect us to change fuctions in a dim litted atmosphere, they should have a bigger and lit remote. I for one don't mind if the remote is huge, main thing is that it's usable in theater settings. But Hey, you get what you pay for. I'm satisfied.

Strength:

Plug set, front panel display, DTS/DD decoding, value

Weakness:

Limited remote cntl. of other brands

Great value for a full featured A/V unit with all of the basic functions needed. Very clean power even at upper levels, no dist. /w 4 Ohm speakers even though it is rated at 8 Ohm.

Also, very good ability to taylor sound to all 6 speakers on a per input basis.

At well under $200 this is a really great unit.

Strength:

nice matrix dot display...and thats about it

Weakness:

everything...poor sound quality most important

well i bought this receiver about a year ago...and wow, have i learned alot since then...back then i did poor research on this, and i payed for it. this receiver sucks basically, it's sound quality is muffled and you have to crank the volume up to about 45-50 out of 80 to get loud sound (thats over half the power) which leads to a constant hissing sound of distortion. please don't make the same mistake i made. furthermore, i the digital (optical) input simply decided to not work one day, and i had to send it in to jvc...they couldn't fix it so i got a in store credit to circuit city, which was in a sense a relief cause i got rid of this piece of crap. go with denon, yamaha, sony, or pioneer if you want a nice receiver.

Strength:

I/O for everything under the sun including S-Video and optical. Price.

Weakness:

Damn it's big. S-Video input cannot be viewed by an analog output and vice-versa. Is this normal?

Does everything that it should and looks / sounds great. Half way up the volume scale more than fills the room and no distortion even beyond that. This thing has more features than I'll ever use, much of it is just beyond me.

Frankly, reviewing this is out of my league. I can't give you any insight into its handling of DTS or Dolby whatchamacallit. It looks good, it sounds good, it's cheap. 'Nuff said.

looks sweet, sounds sweet, and very adaptable.

This is my first receiver purchase, and I have to admit I am very impressed with this product. First off I must give kudos to JVC for making their installation instructions simple. With Technology brimming over the top in today's society it seems as though people are supposed to know what an RCA cable is, or where the AV jack is on the back of your TV. JVC's equipment comes with illustrated pictures of many different system setups. Within an hour I was head banging to Metallica in my living room.
Now I must move on with the technical mumbo jumbo as easily as I can describe it for your reading pleasure. This receiver has 100 Watts of power out of 2 channels. Both of these channels are driven into 8 ohms. It also has a Dolby Digital and DTS decoder that are built in for home theater setups. I must warn you though. To achieve true home theater the system must be setup digitally. That means buying expensive digital cables, and saying good bye to your RCA cables.
I have to say that the only complaint I have is that I can only get the remote to work with other JVC products that I have. This would be handy but my TV and CD player are not JVC so I am stuck with three other remotes to deal with.

I suggest visiting YourInsider.com before you purchase anything for your home theater. They have excellent prices and will save you lots of cash.
