Strength:

remote,ruggedness,appearance,pre-outs,the denon quality.

Weakness:

kind of old for the price.otherwise none

i bought this receiver from my brother fo 200.00 2 months ago.it didn't have the remote that we needed and we were to use a universal remote.i realised i would need the correct remote, and user manual so i ordered both for 120.00 making this a 320.00 buy.i did not know the age of this receiver until now so for the money,i could have gotten more for the money.denon, however is above reproach, and i like the remote, and also the pre outs for the front channels.i have extra power amps i could use with the avr 87.i like the flexibility.the receiver has enough power itself to power my homemade speakers and my design acoustics d12 speakers with power to spare.dvds sound great.

Strength:

Outstanding sound, DTS, surround and 5 channel features

Weakness:

No S-Video and the rather confusing remote

The Denon AVR-87 provides clear, clean sound throughout the dynamic range it offers. Crisp clear highs, great midrange and deep lows. I don't hold myself out to be an audio expert, but I do know when a receiver sounds great! This replaces a Yamaha and the sound didderence is like night and day. The Denon offers a greater range of control for each listening feature, much like my old Sony did. By setting the Rock and Jazz to the size and setting of the room, it immediately was clear what a super receiver this is. It is powering a matched set of Advent Mini speakers for the front and rear, an Advent subwoofer and an advent Theatre center channel. Yet with the dimunitive size of these speakers, the denon fills the room with outstanding sound.

The remote control was confusing to start with, but becomes easier to use with time. The controls on the front panel also appear different in that they are rotary and not all push buttons like I am used to. But again, they get easier to use with time. But, if you want to hit a button and expect perfect sound automatically, the AVR-87 isn't for you. Like any fine musical instrument, it must be fine tuned to the ear of the user. But if you're willing to spend a few hours and set this up to your own personal listening venue, you will be highly pleased with your purchase.

I purchased this receiver at Sears after it was returned and sat on the return shelf for a month. The price kept being reduced and I was able to get this unit for less than $200 out the door, with all the original paperwork, remote and the two year Denon warranty still intact. What a bargain, or a steal at that price!

Strength:

value, sound, ease of use

Weakness:

remote (in my set-up at least), lack of S video switching (but most receivers at this price point don't)

I bought this receiver in November for just a little over $400 to replace my Denon AVR-1400. Since installing the AVR-87 into my rack, I haven't once regretted making the purchase. I looked at Yamaha, Onkyo, and Marantz while shopping around but settled back onto Denon once again.

Set up with the AVR-87 posed no problems as the manual answered the few questions that I couldn't figure out on my own. The only set up related hassle I had was that the 87 doesn't accept dual banana plugs where the 1400 did, so I had to go buy single plugs to use instead, but even that wasn't too much of a problem.

As far as sound quality goes, I couldn't be any happier with the unit. I have NHT SuperZero's for the corners along with the Super Center and a powered sub. All speakers are set to small and with this set up the receiver hasn't had any problems keeping up with whatever source material that I've thrown at it, whether it be CD or DVD. The sound is never bright or harsh and tends to be more laid back. Different speakers will have an impact on the sound quality, but with the NHT's everything is fine.

The ergonomics of the unit are fine once you get accustomed to how everything works. It took a couple of days to get used to the rotary source selector instead of direct access buttons like the 1400 had, but like I said, after a couple of days it was not problem at all. I haven't had any problems getting the reciever to do what I wanted it to do since the first evening that I hooked it up.

The remote that comes with the unit is fine as long as you don't try to use it as a universal remote for you other components. It will operate most of the basic functions of all my components but won't operate some of the more common functions that you would think that it should. I scrapped the remote and bought an One For All AV Producer 8 with learning capabilities and haven't had any problems since.

Over all I am very pleased with this receiver and would recomment it to anyone looking for a good sounding and easy to use receiver without a lot of needless features and all at a good price.
