Very good sound Good Design

No ESP No G-Protection (Shock Protection) Case Easily cracked

D-191 is OK. The sound is exceptional, and so is the design, along with the board design and motor life. The tracking is very easily knocked off because of the lack of ESP or G-Protection. This means that it is definently not joggable. If you want a joggable one, get one with at least 30-second ESP+. This was my first CD-Player, and as a first, it looks good and really sounds good and also is very durable. My experience with AIWA products are that it is easily damaged. Although Sony did buy AIWA, I'm not sure if AIWA is still indepenent, but oh well. It an average buy. I'd say: Dont get it. Go for a cheaper solution. Get Memorex or RCA or whatevers on sale. It will perform better, if not, sound better. I'd recommend Panasonic or AIWA or Sony, but more preferably Sony. Sony products are durable and produce better sound and last longer because, no offense, any products made outside the US by Asians are always much better then US made products. Because it is designed for precision to the nth degree and is tested extensively, unlike those $17.99 units at target. So technically get Sony.

Good sound.

No ESP. No pause.

I picked this up for $20 at the Pawn Shop thinking that for $20, it was worth the gamble of stumbling into a really good portable cd-player. Anyway, after playing with it for a bit, these are my impressions: -The sound with the extra-bass is pretty good. In fact better then any discman I think I've ever heard. -But once you turn on the extra bass, everything sounds "warm and blurry." -There's no pause, but I don't find this such a downfall. -No ESP is a big problem for most people, but I don't care about that as much as sound quality. -Volume goes high which is nice. -There's a bunch of play modes (shuffle, ect.)

Design is good since this model is very old model.

No skip protection. It even skips while you are walking.

This cd player is not that bad after all. Becuase I bought this cd player 3years ago and it still runs..well i dont use it right now.

Mega-Bass, AVLS, AUX- + phones input, cool design

This is not a bad discman, but the sound isn''t very good. When you turn on the MEGA BASS, and then put the volume on 8, the sound gets disturbed. But in general, this discman is worth buying.

The sound quality from this player is not bad at all, but that's about the only positive aspect I found in this machine. The player skips repeatedly. It skipped quite a bit when I first bought it, but it got slightly worse months later, until it just suddenly stopped playing. I couldn't walk down stairs without the player skipping. Player lasted from July '99 to Dec. '99. Batteries recently went, and the same time those batteries went, it seems the player went as well.

No pause button, either. I'd say it's a good very basic player, but the fact is, for the fairly high retail price of this player, it's just not a good deal. Really, if all Sony players are like this, do NOT buy them. I just got a basic AIWA player and although it's one of the lower-level players that AIWA offers, it's about a thousand times better than this Sony model. I can shake the daylights out of this AIWA player and it doesn't even skip. Much more detailed sound out of the AIWA player as well.

Can read badly scratched disks. Take a fairly hard jolt.

like a car with just the essentials to make it go. BASE. CHEAP. Ok if you don't want any real features. Sony needs to do better than this.My old D-141 lasted 5 years before dying. it had plenty of drops and no effect. one and the thing needed to be shot. save your money and check out higher up models.

Has played all CD's and CDR's I have tried so far, but often you can't go directly to few of the last tracks on the disc. For example: If you want to hear track 10, you have to go to some of the earlier track and jump track by track to 10, otherwise it doesn't find the track 10. Skips very easily. If the digital Mega Bass is not on, there is enormous digital distorsion present at low levels: this can be determined in fade-outs at the end of tracks and in quieter passages. When Mega Bass is on, this sounds pretty good and there is not that distorsion problem. Coarse digital volume control is good, in portable kludge you do not need higher resolution. Blue color is neat (also available in silver). Seems to be very durable. Doesn't have any useless fancy features so this is very easy to use. Included headphones are adequate and in general for its (cheap) price, it's not too bad CD player.

Reliable, better shock resistance than Panasonics with antishock turned off (antiskip makes them sound bad anyways)

This review is for the Sony D-181. I think the D-191 (replacement for 181) is kind of junky from the reviews I've read on it, and the fact that it's made in china when the 181 was made in malaysia.
2 of my friends have this discman, actually 1 now because one of them got stolen recently, but they have both lasted 14 months now and still are working. The one that got stolen had been dropped about 6 times and still worked good.
Annoying things are that the batteries are hard to get to stay in the things, and the tracking is pretty slow.
Both of my friends, by concidence have another family member that got the same discman at the same time (christmas) as well so there are 4 D-181's all working after 14 months.
These days portable cd players seem like the most unreliable thing out there in my experience but Sony seems pretty good usually.

this is the first cd player I ever bought. It a good player. sony suck`s now. over priced crap and the cd player is made in china. get an awia cd player.
