Strength:

I have this little giant designed by Nelson Pass and all I have to tell you is great things about it...no fair to compare it to my Acurus A-200 but really good performer as my second system.

Weakness:

None! It just get warm enough but never too hot at least that's not my case.

Strength:

Non fatiguing sound with extended but smooth highs. Renders a deep soundstage with good inner detail.

Weakness:

No negatives. Nelson Pass designed this amp to run a bit hot keeping the MOSFET outputs in class A for the first watts.

I own an array of systems and amplifiers including Conrad Johnson, Sonic Frontiers, Adcom and Parasound.

The Adcom GFA 5802 and it's smaller brother the GFA 5300 are excellent sounding amplifiers based on a 3 gain stage design leveraging International Rectifier HexFets. The design by Nelson Pass produces a very good soundstage with strong inner detail and a smooth high end compared to many bi-polar output designs. If any amp is old and poorly ventilated, the caps in the gain stages can skew off spec and cause a degradation in the sound quality.

All older amps should have all push on connectors cleaned with ProGold and the bias and AC balance set prior to critical listening. If these Adcom amps are in spec, they will compete favorably with many amps currently on the market.

Adcom GFA-5300 Power Amp, I have been a audio fanatic for longer then i want to remember, All as i can stay ,Any body staying that the Adcom GFA-5300 Power amp doesn,t sound good, Has a piss pure sounding preamp hooked up to it, To make a long story short, As i found out with the one i have,I had a Nikko Betta 30 Preamp hooked up to it at first ,The low end was like it wasn,t there, Then i got a hold of a Kenwood Basic C-2.Preamp, I could not belive the differance in how the system sounded, It blew me away, How much more the music was define with the kenwood preamp,

Now that prices have come down on the older Adcoms I decided to upgrade to all power amps for my home theater. I have a friend who designs equipment and I asked him if he could do a custom modification to my 5300 to be bridgable. He did and while he was at it he tested the RMS power output with both channels driven. That little 5300 puts out 120W x2@8ohm, 175 x2@4ohms and 350w x1@ 8ohms! Those are RMS outputs, not peak. Adcom seems to under rate their amplifiers.

In a direct comparison to the older GFA555 the newer MOSFET amps seem to have better control on the lows and are a little more laid back highs. I tested both my GFA5500, 5300, and 555. All sound great however I am still amazed at the clean power the little 5300 puts out.

I conducted the comparisons using WAV files on my laptop and a set of Energy 6 1/2 inch 2way connoisseur speakers.

Yes there are better sounding amps out there, but at 5 times the cost. With the prices of the 5300 under $200 on ebay, these amps are an under rated deal.

I have had lots of power amps through the years and can say that this amplifier sounds great. I have it driving a pair of old JBL L3's that I have biwired and it is incredible. Not too sure why some folks don't like the sound, but I prefer the sound of mosfet amps anyway. To me bipolar designs sound veiled, but not this amp, loads of detail, but still smooth and the low end sounds effortless and punchy. I got it cheap and consider it one of my best buys ever. I have owned lots of high end amplifiers over the years and to my ears this is a keeper. true it doesn't have any turn on thump/dc protection relay circuitry in it, which to me is good from an audio sound quality standpoint, no relay to degrade the output signal, I would buy another one if given the chance..
